Go West, Young Woman!

Posts have been a little scarce on the ground here, because I'm in the middle of prepping to change jobs and change coasts.  Scrapping with everyone about religion, philosophy, and musical theatre is fun, but it's not how I earn my living.I have sometimes said that, in my dream job, I would have a badge that said "Methodology Cop" and I would be allowed to kick in doors and help people overhaul their research projects and interventions.  "Ma'am, I need you to step away from that convenience s … [Read more...]

Here’s what’s coming up this week…

coming-soon

I'm going to be received into the Catholic Church this Sunday (baptism, confirmation, and first communion).  Here's what's going to be going on here at the blog from now until Thanksgiving. In the spirit of my blogging advice from yesterday, I'm going to be doing some arts blogging as a lens on some parts of my conversion/spiritual life on Thursday and Friday.  (Fairly musical theatre heavy, natch). On Saturday, I'll be on my anti-football hobbyhorse in honor of the Harvard-Yale gam … [Read more...]

Handy Dandy Blogging Advice!

Blog_New Yorker cartoon (Medium)

This weekend, I went up to Baltimore to attend a session of the Fall General Assembly of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The session was called, "An Encounter With Social Media: Bishops and Bloggers Dialogue" and included a presentation of survey results about Catholic blog reading habits, a panel discussion, small group discussion, and then a period where the bishops asked questions of the bloggers en masse and then we switched and asked them questions. They encouraged us to … [Read more...]

Housekeeping Note

When I made the move over to Patheos last October, all my post tags got wiped out. I was much too lazy to deal with retagging for a while, but I'm working through the backlog at 5 posts a day. Sometimes I notice that a series of linked posts never got a Sequence Index post, so don't be surprised or confused if new ones pop up in your RSS reader. … [Read more...]

Post-Chicago Update + Radio Interview

I had a lovely time at Chicago Ideas Week, and my 15 minute talk on the Ideological Turing Test and how to have better fights should be online in about a month. For a preview of what my co-panelists and I talked about, you can check out the image above. Chicago Ideas Week contracted with Ink Factory to have posters drawn during each of the talks that highlighted key ideas.  I'm standing in front of the illustration they generated during Religion: Exploring the Unexpected.  I'm trying to point at … [Read more...]

I’m speaking at Chicago Ideas Week today!

I'm on the Religion panel, and I think my talk on the Ideological Turing Test and fostering productive fights will go up online.  I'll keep you posted.  Oh, and in honor of the talk, I've finally overhauled my pre-conversion "About Me" tab above.  Want to take a look and give me any notes in the comments of this post?  I'll have time for a few revisions after my plane touches down.  Older versions of the "About" description are archived here, for comparison purposes. And while I'm aloft, chec … [Read more...]

For the 800th Post, a Blast from the Past

Hurrah!  And I'm even more delighted by the nearly 18,000 comments you lot have posted since this blog started in the summer of 2010.I've been going back through the archives, five posts a day, to finally fix the tags that got mangled in the Patheos move, and I found a preconversion 7 Quick Takes that I thought would be fun to rerun today.Take it away, past!Leah...I started this blog over the summer as a way to try to clarify my thoughts on religion and morality, especially after I … [Read more...]
