This reminds me of the famous quotation by Bertrand Russell: “As far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence.”
Of course, it’s generally not about intelligence; Russell also noted that “people accept religion on emotional grounds.” Which is to say–if one realizes that the Universe, insofar as is possible, must be figured out, will not be somehow mystically revealed–no grounds at all, in my opinion.
I like the quote that calls the Bible “the most genial book in the world–it never disagrees the person reading it.” I don’t remember who said it though, or what the exact wording was.
The Bible is a Rorschach test. It can be and has been interpreted dozens of different, conflicting ways. Look for things you like and you’ll find them. Readers ignore the rest.
