Crazy Christian drivers

Someone tried to run me off the road yesterday by tailgating me and general angry driving nonsense. I don’t do well with these people — I slow down to infuriate them further and laugh at their impatience.

But anyway, this guy finally sped by and his car was plastered with Christian bumper stickers. What a hypocrite.

I know many angry drivers that are Christians. In fact, I think all the angry drivers I know are Christians. I’m sure I have a skewed experience, but don’t these people realize they’re acting like hypocrites? Doesn’t their holy book tell them to obey the government’s laws (Romans 13)?

They don’t seem to be making the connection.

Haha, whatever happened to “Sunday Drivers?”

  2. Steve says:

The religious hypocrite isn’t just a driving thing. My sister in law and several friends of mine all despised the Sunday morning shift at the restaurants they were working at back in the day- the church people were notoriously horrible tippers.

Granted, this is purely anecdotal, so take it with a grain of salt.

    We all eat babies, right?

  3. jtradke says:

    Confirmation bias. Just sayin’.

  4. Chayanov says:

Didn’t the Pope declare road rage was a sin?

  5. wazza says:

um, might just be that most of the people where you live are christian, so anyone who pisses you off is likely to be a christian…

but then, they tend to look upon god’s word as more of a guideline in any case.

  6. GDad says:

My son and I noticed a car in front of us yesterday that had a woman draped over the front seat to take care of a baby in the back seat. Our state has mandatory seat belt laws for drivers and front-seat passengers.

My son and I both noticed the big bumper sticker that advertised a local church.

  7. Digital Dame says:

I had a lecherous old neighbor who, after inviting my kids to attend vacation bible school at his church, tried to grope me.

Oh, and he and his wife both had those “Jesus” fish all over their cars.

  8. Metro says:

God was his co-pilot, and the pilot was napping, I guess.

  9. kristi says:

I read a study recently that claimed that drivers with many bumper stickers were more territorial and more prone to road rage. Maybe this is a facet of that?

  10. Metro says:

Makes sense to me. If you have to announce your religious belief/political philosophy/committment to honking when in a state of arousal on your car, then you don’t sound like the type to avoid getting in peoples’ faces.

  11. random guy says:

kristi, I read the same study. It concluded that it wasn’t the content of the bumper stickers, but the actual number of them. The political/religious/humorous nature of the bumper stickers didn’t matter, they found that the more any one person had the more likely they were to commit road rage.

  12. It’s not the fact that this guy was a Christian… it’s the fact that, statistically speaking, anyone who adorns his.her car with bumper stickers is more likely to drive aggressively. See here.

    You’re so right.

I actually blogged a bit about this (click my name above for the post).

Incidentally you have a great blog here – and I can identify with many of the things you say and have experienced.
