Ahmadinejad has never been the least bit subtle in his desire to (as he said) “wipe Israel off the map”. I’m sure this sentiment is quite common in Muslim countries.
Not that they seem to have any use for anyone who isn’t Muslim.
The mode of negotiation with such people is: You don’t. You negotiate with their more reasonable fellows. Even some Hamas leaders have indicated a willingness to at least recognize the geopolitical realities above and beyond the nonsense of failing to recognize Israel’s right to exist, and might lend their weight to a longer ceasefire, or something even more permanent, given proper incentive.
However, killing those who have no part in the conflict in an 80-to-one ratio with your own casualties isn’t going to win you any hearts or minds.
And being seen as siding with them, as Abbas looks to Palestinians to be doing, virtually guarantees that Hamas will win the next elections as well.
Israel is breeding the next generation of Hamas. And it will be tragic for both countries.
Both countries’ residents believe God picked out this particular garden spot for them to colonize. Against such superstition, how can reason stand?
The problem I have with the quote is there is no source stated as to who witnessed him saying at the “… local mosque on the day before he was killed.” I have no real faith in The Daily Mail performing any real checking on this quote and every faith in them wanting to believe this quote. Saying that with his record it sounds like exactly the sort of thing he would say.
Have you ever seen how small the State of Israel is compared to all the Islam nations surrounding it? Yet, Israel is not messed with, and it flourishes in a dessert area.
Israel is a Jewish nation, and Jews are the Lord’s Old Testament people, and the Lord promissed them a land of their own…..God loves and blesses Israel.
Actually, I think it has something more to do with the fact that Israel has positive ties with the US, and modern military hardware as a result, compared to 1960′s Soviet antiques.
Probably worth pointing out that Israel is messed with on a weekly basis in the form of rocket attacks.
@Proto: Don’t burst his bubble. God loves the Jews, which is why he protected them from a complete holocaust. And he could have eradicated them, but he decided to spread them out and have people hate and kill them through most of their history. Truly he loves them. The rockets that attack them are a form of love. He is protecting the True Jew — the ones that fall are really Muslims in disguise.
(Just in case it’s not obvious to other commenters, I’m being sarcastic.)
@Jabster: Good points. Perhaps I’m too quick to assume they did due diligence.
Also, could someone please explain this to me? If the Jews are God’s chosen people, then what’s the deal with Jesus and believing in him to get into heaven. If Jesus is the only ticket to heaven, then aren’t the Jews going to hell if they don’t accept them? And why the hell does God “choose” certain groups of people over others anyway, a bit racist, you think? Am I missing something or am I trying to make sense out of nonsense.
@Joel: The traditional Christian explanation is that God gave the Jews their messiah with Jesus, and they rejected him. So God gave the option of salvation to non-Jews (Gentiles) as well. In other words, Christians are now God’s chosen people.
This was one of the things that really stuck in my craw, as well. Long before Jesus was a glimmer in his daddy’s eye, the Jews were the “chosen people”, leaving out all others the world over. So I figure since I wasn’t born a Jew, I was up the proverbial creek to begin with. If God created all people everywhere, and then thumbed his nose at most of them… I mean, really, I’ll sign on with the opposition. Even Dante granted righteous pagans the upper circle in Hell.
I would take issue with the newspaper, but also one has to wonder about the translations. As an ex-Muslim who speaks Arabic and has spent a lot of time in the Middle East, I have seen media outlets play fast and loose with translations. A lot of the time, I think it is due to the fact that there aren’t a lot of Arabic-English translators around, but sometimes, I really think it is simply for propaganda/political purposes.
(sorry I’m late with this, but I’ve been out of town)
“However, killing those who have no part in the conflict in an 80-to-one ratio with your own casualties isn’t going to win you any hearts or minds”
I, and I imagine many others, no longer buy into this “innocent civilian” notion of the Palestinians. They elected Hamas knowing full well what Israel and the rest of the western world thought of them. Hard to blame everyone else when they put them in power.
And for years the “innocent civilians” have allowed Hamas to set up their rocket launchers in the middle of neighborhoods. Hamas uses mosques to store weapons. Their fighters hide like cowards in folks homes. This, to me, makes the civilians complicit with the terrorist acts of Hamas.
*shudder*
This isn’t going to end well, is it?
This kind of puts the latest actions of the Israelis in perspective, doesn’t it? How do you negotiate with people who have this attitude?

@Daniel
Stories from the Daily Mail the UK’s media outlet that makes Fox News look impartial?
I don’t recommend the Daily Mail, but I don’t have any reason to think the quote is unreliable. If it is, let me know and I’ll correct it.

And thank FSM that he’s chosen me.
