Comments Now Have Threads

WordPress.com released a new comment threading feature today, and I’ve enabled it. Hopefully it will make comment conversations a little easier to track.

You can reply to a comment using the “reply” link on the top right side of a comment, and your reply will appear nested under the original comment.

Now give thanks to the WordPress gods!

    First!

    Sorry, I couldn’t help myself ;)

  2. Jonathan says:

As I remember it, WordPress (at least the WordPress.org/self-hosted distribution) has had threaded commenting since 2.7, and it’s just been a matter of implementing it in the themes.

I may, of course, be wrong.

  3. Teleprompter says:

I wonder how this will work out in 300+ comment threads.

    Hehe. I can’t wait.

  4. John C says:

    I don’t like it, changes the continuity…switch it back…NOW!

Ha, just messin’ with ya D!

    JC

  5. John C says:

I guess I really dont need to sign off as “JC” each time do I? I mean, my name “John C” is up in the top left corner for all (atheists) to see anyway…right?

Ok, from now on I will only sign off as “JC” when HE says it, not…”John C”….k?? lol

    JC….uhh…err…uhh…I mean…John C

    John C

Design, content, attitude, intelligence, integrity, comment-threading – this place just gets betterer and betterer

  7. Elemenope says:

Just found out that threads have a maximum depth of four, which is still worlds better than a max depth of one, for sure, but not nearly as useful as I thought.

  8. Lorena says:

    Praise the e-gods!

  9. Baka says:

Since this is sort of a “nuts and bolts” thread, I’ll go ahead and ask something I’ve been wanting to ask for a while:

Can someone point me to a FAQ where I can teach myself how to format my comments with things like italics, quote boxes, and the like?

    Thanks much.

  10. NICE!

    No more “@whatshisface”

[Edit: I've changed it to 5 now.]

    Let’s check it out…

  11. Oh… btw.

Daniel, if it’s not too much trouble, can you go ahead and go into all of your past posts and move all of people’s replies (@wintermute, @Vorjack, @John C, etc) to be underneath the comment to which they were referring?

    Thanks a bunch.

  12. Danny says:

Yay for WordPress. Now I can chat with other commenters without actually reading the original post. :p

  13. Hmm.. I just realized a drawback.

Usually I keep an eye on the number of comments to know when there are new ones to read. In the past it was easy to just shoot to the bottom to read the new ones, but now they could be anywhere within the discussion. Could be hard to find the recently added comments when the numbers get upwards of 100+.

I’m just pointing this out because it could cut down on the discussion for those that aren’t willing to scroll through everything to seek out recent additions to respond to, when before we would read the new comments at the bottom like everyone else.

I still think it’s better than before. Just something to keep in mind for when you host elsewhere. I’ve seen some comment threads that highlight all of the new comments that were added since the last time you visited the page.

  14. “I’ll be moving to self-hosting fairly soon, but still trying to find a affordable host”

Are you trying to keep it ad free? I figure a bit of google adsense would help cover your costs, no?

  15. LRA says:

    Dan-

How do I know when new comments get posted on threads? Can you set up a little side bar for this? I don’t want to read the whole post again just too see what I missed since the last time!

  16. LRA says:

oops! I used the familiar term ‘Dan,’ I should have addressed you as Daniel out of respect… sorry! :)

  17. Trevor says:

Hmm. Thought this was going to be a useful thing, but it’s impossible to see “new” comments now when you look back at a thread. Used to scroll to the bottom and there they all were…

  18. Wolf79 says:

Will this kind of Christianity yield the same value for the Africans as the Christianity brought by the foreign missionaries? ,

  19. cello says:

    :-)

    Thanks for the upgrade Daniel!

  20. If that nonsense ever seriously starts, I’m going to go crazy.

  21. I think you are right. But it only became available for those of us on wordpress.com today. I’ll be moving to self-hosting fairly soon, but still trying to find a affordable host that will support a heavily trafficked site (so most shared hosting is not acceptable).

  22. Elemenope says:

IMO, that’s when threading really shines.

Now, if WordPress would just allow implementation of a “preview” button…

  23. VorJack says:

“I wonder how this will work out in 300+ comment threads.”

    Hmmm. We should test it.

Hey, Daniel. Write up a post mocking Libertarian pro-life Twilight fans. That should just about do it.

  24. cello says:

Yeah, preview would be great. I always d’oh! when I see the posted message and want a rewrite.

  25. I hope it’s better than the threaded comments in Disqus, that end up getting so narrow you can’t read them.

  26. Ahhh, this is much better. :-)

  27. Elemenope says:

But there doesn’t seem to be much of a limit on *breadth*. So I take it back. :)

  28. I have it set to 4. I can make it more, but was afraid things would get too squished.

[Edit: I've changed it to 5 now.]

  29. Teleprompter says:

I like the idea of limits. I think this could definitely be abused or get carried away under the wrong circumstances. Plus, too many of these would just be confusing.

  30. Elemenope says:

Yeah, five is probably a happy medium.

  31. Valis says:

    Hi Baka,

I find this site pretty handy :-)

  32. Ok, I really want to change my screen name to whatshisface. ;-)

  33. Elemenope says:

    LOL.

  34. Baka says:

Thanks tons, Valis. :) I should have guessed it was basic HTML, but didn’t want to assume and fill a comment with useless tagging. Much appreciated.

  35. Depending on what commenting system is used, it’s not always HTML, sometimes you can’t do any formatting. I’ve got a few comments floating around the web that have raw HTML in them. Not very pretty. ;-)

  36. Jimminy Christmas says:

I’ve found Project Wonderful to be pretty nice for ads, too. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

    http://www.projectwonderful.com

  37. Danny says:

I like the pricing scheme at Nearly Free Speech. But I’m too cheap so I just go with free hosting.

  38. Baka says:

Yeah, that was what I was worried about, Mike. I have dropped a few posts like that elsewhere, too, and didn’t want to assume. So, I asked. :)
