Miracle Spring Water!

Peter Popoff wants you to know that “God can reverse EVERY negative verdict in your life”… if you’ll just use this bottle of miracle spring water!

BTW, James Randi throughly debunked this fraud.

  1. Bryan says:

I woke up the night after st.pattys to this commercial, what a nightmare!

  2. reckoner71 says:

I’m going to sprinkle some of this on John C’s posts, and see if they make any sense.

Just kidding, John C. But, not really.

    No, seriously. Joking.

    Sort of.

  3. Ocean says:

Oh wow, they’re still going on with the miracle spring water. It’s sad when you get people like “I’ve stopped taking my medicine and decided to pray and use the miracle spring water!” because of stuff like this, all while he rakes in more money a year than I’ve ever seen in my life.

I’ve always liked James Randi’s videos, glad he decided to debunk Peter Popoff.

On the other hand the phrase “You smite that cancer with your FIST!” part is hilarious and reminds me of some bad anime movies.

  4. Kelly says:

praying works fine on it’s own.
we dont need the so called ‘miracle water’.

  5. DarkMatter says:

I bet his $heart$ is drivng him to work overtime in this global reccesion if he is still around.

  6. Somegreencat says:

The miracle water is nothing different then what Penn & Teller was doing in their show. Using the fears and desires of people to get what they want. Of course Penn & Teller let others know what was up and they weren’t trying to get money from the victims. I would like to see some follow up videos of the ones he claimed to heal. If healing like this was the truth I figure it would be easy to find those type of videos.

  7. dr.R. says:

“Miracle spring water” is not very original, see for example the “miracle” spring in Lourdes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lourdes_water

What is new, though, is that they promise such earthly miracles. I also want a cheque of 7000 dollars!

  8. jamesatracy says:

The only person who has reversed a life of defeat to be rolling in money from this is Peter Popoff himself. Disgraceful.

  9. It’s great that nowadays a Christian can get anything he or she wants for such a small price. We’ve certainly come a long way from the Middle Ages – one of those papal Indulgences could really set you back..

  10. Bill says:

    This is a spoof, right?

  11. Harold Shuckhart says:

What is disgraceful about this is that the main stream churches do nothing to protect the gullible from these crooks. I suspect it is because they are concerned that the faithful might take a closer look at what they are getting for putting their “widow’s mite” into the collection plate every Sunday and see that it’s all miracle water or what we used to call BS.

    Harold

  12. José says:

How could you not trust a man who is selling something, is a Christian, and looks just like Uri Geller. That’s the trust trifecta.

  13. Joe Bible says:

That water sounds awesome. I’m totally getting some. I wonder if i can buy it in bulk at Costco.

  14. Michael says:

The man is a snake. The people who believe this crap, however, are some of the biggest morons on planet earth. What a great way to set the human race back a couple thousand years……

  15. It’s just the natural progression from Dr. Able Johnson’s Miracle Elixir.

“Yes you to can with one treatment at home cure all your ales with Dr. Able Johnson’s Miracle Elixir. Made from the most refined secret ingredients with the liquorish and peaches after taste that everyone loves.”

But with Miracle Spring water you take out all the bull and just say it’s magic!

  16. Jeff Eyges says:

I know that people who are desperate will believe anything, but, even so, I cannot understand how this man remains in business. Even Benny Hinn seems slightly polished by comparison. I can’t understand why the feds haven’t shut him down.

  17. Michael says:

I’m wondering how much he actually earned from selling that crap. Isn’t there any law against such blatant trickery?

  18. DarkMatter says:

At Popoff’s peak in 1987, according to his comptroller, he took in $4.3 million a month. [17] After his exposure on the Tonight show he declared bankruptcy in 1987.[4]

According to Charity Navigator, in FYE 2004, Peter Popoff received $548,167 as president of his organization and the Peter Popoff Ministries raised $16,220,066 in revenue in FYE 2004.[18] Then in FYE 2005, Popoff received $628,732, his wife Elizabeth received $203,029, his son received $182,166, and daughter received $176,290 with $23,556,469 in revenue.[18] These figures are from IRS documents, which “only outline the millions of dollars people give Popoff’s organization in the US.” [19]

  19. Jeff Eyges says:

Same with Hinn – he was exposed, but he managed to come back. They have more lives than a cat, these guys. It’s impossible to get rid of them.

A large part of the problem is that they’re nearly always suborned and protected by the rest of the evangelical community, including their fellow televangelists. The only ones I know of who were turned on by other televangelists were the Bakkers, and Mel White, who used to work for them as well as for Falwell, had an interesting take on it – he claimed they were viewed with suspicion by the others because they tended to be relatively nonjudgmental of gay people.

As long as you toe the party line, and reinforce the belief system – in this case, as long as you’re willing to condemn everyone outside the group to an eternal hell – they’ll let you get away with pretty much anything. It’s standard group dynamics; they aren’t alone in this, but they (and the Islamic fundamentalists) are the only ones who make it a requirement to believe that everyone who disagrees with them will be tortured for all of eternity. They’re utterly contemptible.

  20. I have a personal beef with this particular scam because my stepfather was considering buying this stuff just days before he died (I suspect) but wouldn’t talk to me about it, because he knew what the reaction would be. But there’s a new scam – the online prayer site – that PZ was talking about, which got me thinking about the ethics of taking advantage of people with irrational garbage like this:

    http://luckyatheist.blogspot.com/2009/03/why-its-okay-to-sell-junk-to-religious.html

  21. Somegreencat says:

Has anyone else seen the commerical on in the early morning hours for the prayer cross? I see this as the same as the miracle water.

  22. Charlie Mac says:

This is clearly a load of utter lies.

Selling Salvation is directly contradicting the religion this fella claims to believe in.

This miracle spring water does not work, otherwise ALL Doctors and ALL Surgeons would use it.

    This product is NOT real
This is NOT a way to be faithful in christianity.

  23. emily says:

WOW.. if he means goodness to the world and people why are they charging for this. wouldnt you do it for free out of the goodness of your heart? Sounds like a money hustle.

  24. Clay Cook says:

I’ll tell you what: if he’d accept donations instead of charging for it, I’d be more willing to test it.

@Charlie Mac: I agree with just about everything you said. However, I’d imagine a few doctors would be skeptical even if it did work.

Even if it does work, the Bible warns not to believe every spirit.

Anyone who believes this nonsense is a simple fool.

  25. Eric K. says:

Prayer does work. Faith is not a weakman’s answer for lack of abilities – faith in God – is simply accepting that we’re no different, but sinners, and by the free gift which we call “Grace” from God in form of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, if we only believe Him as our Saviour, we have life. Prayer is not your vending machine for your selfish desires. God listens to all our prayers and answers them, sometimes with what we desire, sometimes with no answer since giving it may hurt us (i.e. give money and you become hopelessly attached to money, thus being worse off than when you started), or he gives us something even better. We simply cannot be so foolish as to “gauge” God on how He will answer. This Popoff guy is simply a disgrace. Unbelievable. Do not believe these bags of lies… and do not be propelled by your greed to “get lucky” because I suspect that’s how a lot of people get sucked into this mockery in the first place.

This great country was founded on Christian faith. George Washington declared Thanksgiving Day to be a day to give thanks to Our God, for all that He has done for the U.S. but Jefferson didn’t like mentioning of God so it stopped there…. until Abraham Lincoln declared it national holiday again many years later in his proclamation which openly states that God is the provider and without God, U.S. would not have been as blessed and great a nation as it is.

Now we are forgetting God fast. In the name of “intellect”, “open mind” and “respecting others” more and more the government prohibits Christian ideals from being proclaimed openly. No more Bibles in schools, trying to get read of “God” on the bills and capitol buildings… and a discerning eye will see, that U.S. is on a way down fast. If only this great nation and its people forget their arrogant ways and look back on this country’s roots in God. Let us pray for this nation.

Don’t worry, there is an easy solution. All you need to do as your neighbor for a glass of water.

Poof, the miracle of human kindness.

yours, o lord is he the greatness the power and the glory the victory and the majesty for all that is in heaven and in earth is yours yours is the kingdom o lord and you are exalted as head over all. both riches and honour come from you and you reign over all in your hand is power and might in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 1 chr.29.11-13 In the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god. He was in the beginning with god. ALL THINGS were made through him and without him nothing was made that was made. in him was the light of men. john 1:2 If your word abide in me and my words abide in you you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you. john 15:7 May god almight give me and my dad and girls the powers we have ask him for as i have ask and he desire. hE WILL GIVE IT TO US TODAY IF THE LORD JESUS THE WORD OF GOD WILL NEVER LEAVE ME OR FORSAKE ME AND YOU AND BARRY SMITH WILL TESTIFY TO THE WORD OF GOD TO DAY.

  36. John C says:

I agree…this guy (Popoff) is a phony, a snake oil salesman. It’s sad that folks (of all walks of life)think they have to resort to these kind of pathetic profiteering tactics.

  37. I’d say the effectiveness rate of prayer and miracle water are about on par with each other.

On second thought, water might be slightly better, because at least you get some nourishment out of it.

    :)

  38. LRA says:

Actually prayer doesn’t work just fine. The mother of a friend of mine decided that she was going to live her faith and refuse treatment for her colon cancer. She is now dying, living her last days in a morphine induced stupor.

  39. Bill says:

“praying works fine on it’s own.”

    Evidence please.

  40. Teleprompter says:

    This is not a spoof.

  41. marcion says:

Actually, the miracle spring water gives you miraculous diarrhea due to the miracle amoeba’s inside.

  42. marcion says:

unless the mainstream churches are watching late night tv they might not even know this guy exists, just like Bill who asked if its a spoof. What exactly do you expect the mainstream churches to do about this? Your accusation is kinda like people saying the moderate Muslims don’t do enough to fight terrorism. What do they want the moderate Muslims to do, terrorize the terrorists? Then they would cease to be moderate and would become militant. And obviously preaching against Popoff in a mainstream church is fairly pointless as the people buying into this aren’t mainstream church-goers obviously.

  43. Sock says:

All preachers on tv who promise you something divine in return for giving them money are scam artists.

  44. Devysciple says:

It absolutely must be a Poe. I must believe that despite evidence for the contrary. Because if I accepted that people could descend to such a low level of intelligence and rational thinking, I could not feel compassion and respect for my fellow human beings anymore.

    whispers: It’s a Poe… It’s a Poe… It’s a Poe… It’s a Poe…

  45. reckoner71 says:

A fool and his money are soon parted.

    Buyer beware.

  46. Andrew N.P. says:

Your humanist faith has blinded you to the truth.

    Peter Popoff IS REAL.
    Miracle Spring Water IS REAL.
    Even this infomercial IS REAL.

For moar, here’s a 20/20 report on the scam:

    http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Story?id=3164858

  47. Ohmu says:

You mean the one made of silver and crystals? The first time I saw the commercial I shook my head in disbelief.

If that isn’t blatant idol worship, I don’t know what is.

  48. Devysciple says:

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

On my own free will I choose to ignore the bloody obvious and cling to the idea of all this being a Poe like a drowning man clings to his live buoy!

The reason is simple: If I accept the truth, then even the Categorical Imperative is not going to stop me from mutating into a total misanthrope with a burning desire to wipe out humanity, regardless of possible collateral damage.

Btw, that’s a reliable way to deal with cognitive dissonance, just ignoring what otherwise would have unpleasant consequences. (Come to think of it, global genocide might also help reduce C.D. Let’s hope that the religious guys won’t find out).

  49. K says:

Actually, prayer does work, when it’s supposed to. Just because God doesn’t answer our prayers like we want him to, doesn’t mean he’s not listening. “GOD’S” will, will be done, not ours. Personally, I don’t think God wants us to refuse medical help, like a few cults out there suggest. We are supposed to actually “use” the medical science and health care progress that God gave us the brains to think up in the first place, when it’s used for good.

  50. Aaron Creagh says:

Faith does work….that doesn’t mean that you should just stop whatever medications you are on. Now…there ARE times when people can be healed instantaneously …but that is not the rule. Now this Popoff guy…I don’t trust him because it does sound like some kind of scam. He’s giving free “samples” out, probably so that he can get your address so he can continue to bombard your mailbox with info on how to get more products from him such as miracle manna. I’m a Christian, and for me at least, that is not a synonym for ultra naive.

  51. Pascal says:

Our time here on Earth is short and means nothing without God. If she has faith that Jesus died on the cross for her sins and believes he is the son of god then she is saved. She’s not dying she’s living.

  52. Aaron Creagh says:

The bible tells us to beware of dogs. I guess people tend to forget about that when they are desperate and read about the various miraculous things in there, or possibly something that happened to someone they know. Hey, I believe in miracles…but always be cautious of people on tv. A florescent red flag should go up when you hear somebody saying that they’ll give you something free. Oh…you’ll see how free it is in due time. Instead of the red flag, too many people wave white flags to these messages.

  53. Custador says:

    > drive-by fundie troll posts evangelism on Atheist blog
    > drive-by fundie troll calls self Pascal
    > drive-by fundie troll clearly doesn’t understand Pascal’s Wager

    My Stoopid Detector asploded.

  54. UrsaMinor says:

Again? I thought it was still in the shop being fixed after the last overload.

  55. wazza says:

the one that went this time was the rental one for when Custy’s one is in the shop. He’s going to lose his deposit.
