Comments Improved

I whipped up an improvement to the comments today. Now they are more compact and easier to follow the threading, so more fit on your screen yet are easier to read.

It fits almost double the comments in the same amount of space. Here is an example showing the general difference.

The comments dont seem to be working Daniel =(

The previous entries only show the first comment

  2. dr.R. says:

    Looks very good =)

Of course it doesn’t mean that the comments themselves actually improved ;-)

  3. Flea says:

    Testing!

  5. markbey says:

Perhaps the comments not working properly is a display of the asweome power of Yaweh.

    • Daniel Florien says:

If so, it seems I thwarted him… again.

      • Nathaniel says:

It doesn’t count! Because… Ehm… God actually wanted you to have better comments! He was just testing your faith, it’s all.

Nice work, btw. This is how threaded comments should look. Clean and simple :)

      • markbey says:

Daniel thanks for the all of your hard work, in dealing with the switch and the headaches that came with it. If your not careful you are going to have the # 1 Atheist blog of all time. Isn’t it funny how god would even allow a blog to continue to exist, especially a blog where Yahweh’s Soldiers (Christians) are routinely getting fannies rocked.

  6. MahouSniper says:

Aww, now Daniel doesn’t have his own unique border so I know exactly when it’s him!

Also, the avatars are tiny now!

    • Daniel Florien says:

My highlight will be back when I have time to implement it.

The avatars are tiny now, but they were taking up too much space for the # of comments we get. Maybe I’ll have a rollover that shows a larger avatar or something in the future.

      • Flea says:

Don’t bother. Avatars are great the way they are know. This new look is clean and simple; rollovers and other fancy stuff will be just that… fancy…

  7. Nzo says:

Comments look terrific Daniel! I was worried they were going to stay the way they were.

  8. Sock says:

    Thumbs up!

  9. Nzo says:

Daniel, while the forum has improved, it seems that the loading time of pages is lacking. It feels like I’m on a 56k. Is it just me?

    • Daniel Florien says:

It should be snappy most of the time, but I’ve noticed a delay at times too. I’ll be doing some things to (hopefully) speed it up as I have time.

  11. murrowcronkite says:

One thing about the new site . There’s no point in getting a cool avatar ’cause it can’t be seen.

    • Daniel Florien says:

You can’t see them? I see yours.

      • GBM says:

I actually rather like the size

        • Teleprompter says:

The avatar pictures are all blurry. They’re so small that they seem incredibily distorted. I guess I am non-plussed about that aspect, though I do like the look.

          • GBM says:

Yeah they are a little distorted, but they’re good enough to tell everybody apart at a glance, and I think that de-emphasizing the pics brings more focus on the text. I dunno about you guys but I really hate visiting those forums where everybody has a picture signature that takes up half the damned screen.

          • Daniel Florien says:

They look okay for me on Mac. But Macs always look better with images and text. :)

  12. trj says:

Daniel, I notice that the preview feature, while practical, behaves pretty stupidly. Every keyup event, even from a simple shift or arrow key, rebuilds the preview and even reloads the avatar. I expect the various browsers are intelligent enough to cache the image rather than retrieve it at the server every time, but maybe you should verify this.

Also, undo (Ctrl+Z) is no longer available.

    • Daniel Florien says:

I don’t think it’s actually pulling it from the server each time — I think it’s just updating the box so there is a flicker. But it isn’t the best plugin in the world, for sure. Seems better than nothing though until I can improve it or build my own.

    • trj says:

I tried pulling the network cable while editing, and in IE7 this breaks the image. So it seems the image actually is retrieved from the server. That must produce quite a number of requests each day.

  13. Red Dave says:

works fine in IE7 Daniel. Nice work, easy to follow.
