Sorry for the confusion folks. I’ve decided to not move to IntenseDebate for these reasons:
- There is no way to put all the comments on one page.
- Threads are collapsed by default and there is no way to modify it.
- No comment preview.
- No way to link to comment.
- Slows down page load time.
I still really want a voting feature though. Oh well, maybe in the future!
Common Sense Atheism tried IntenseDebate but gave it up. You might look into their experience.
So, what is this IntenseDebate thing?
Deus Ex was a truly fantastic game. (re: Gravatar)
32000 comments! Holy crap! I think I have 32 comments total…LOL…
posted while you were updating, a long post with a lot of lag, for a second it was there as instant debate came on, now its gone lol must be God hates me eh?
One thing I don’t like about voting up and down (And it’s purely selfish) is that my posts will constantly be at the bottom of the page… which is frustrating because I like engaging people in comment and response.
I could be wrong, just guessing, but I think the intention of votes would merely be a “score”, and not affect the posts’ display order.
Gotcha. So it would be different than Discuss? Which literally moves posts up and down based on votes. I think that’s stupid and leads to a bunch of groupthink.
I am guessing based only on my previous experience with comment/forum/etc voting, which has always been about a “rating” and never about display order. The “Discuss” system you mention is the first example I’ve heard of a voting system that affects post order. I agree that is a dumb idea.
Hmm, yeah if you can’t get the past threading back whether you use Intense Debate or not, then this is probably better. Loading time and all comments on one page are a big deal for discussion I think. It’s too bad Intense Debate isn’t more customizable. Oh well you can always switch to something else later if you find a better one.
I think your hard work has paid off! Good job, we appreciate it!

Beware wp-super-cache does make some things slow to update. If you see oddness when switching themes, purge the cache.
If you have a dedicated server, remember to increase the number of mysql connections on mysqld. Don’t configure apache to have more max connections than this. Disable persistent connections in php.ini.
Hi, I’m a long time reader, ocassional commenter. Liking the new look.
Just did a quick search and turned up this. May be of some use to you.
Why would you let the opinions of a group who are probably already biased based on their participation on the site determine whether your comment gets seen or not?
That’s not democracy- it’s censorship.
If the moderator wants it to be a true open public forum then there should be no censorship or removal of any comments.
It is, of course up to the moderator of the blog- It’s their world I guess and if you disagree start your own blog.
Well, I wont comment on the overall looks of the new site. Sometimes being a bit slow in accepting change, I have learned that this is the wisest decision for me. It’ll helps me avoid making rash judgements that equal “other-ness” with “bad-ness”.
For the voting thing, I’m actually against it for two reasons:
1) as brgulker already said, I think it leads to even more groupthink and shoulder-padding, instead of real discussion going on. Sometimes I am already a little sad that there is a rather small amount of controversy going on in many atheist blogs, at least after my fancy.
2) There are already sufficient means around to “vote” for a certain comment, which include more critical thinking than just clicking on a button: You just answer a post, ranging from utterly mocking it for containing complete nonsense, up to the classics like “Contains a lot of WIN”, “Epic Win”, and the likes. It’s more creative, more amusing to read and more ‘human’ than a counter that simply lists the number of people liking/disliking a certain comment, with no regards to the actual why.
Have you looked into disqus? its a similar concept to Intense debate. I happen to like it a little better and I believe it solves the issues that you had with Intense Debate. As an added bonus you’ll still always have the comments saved in the WordPress database so you could always leave it if you didn’t like it.

I have found your new website! Praise the FSM!
I was involved in the DISQUS fiasco on Common Sense Atheism. I recommend that you avoid it. It’s pretty unreliable.
I was praying that you’d find your way! And you did! What do you know, prayer works!

I was thinking about installing a third party commenting system until I saw your post. I guess I should stick to the old one. Thanks!
