Afghanistan's Only Pig Quarantined in Flu Fear

Afgan PigIf this were from The Onion, it would be funny. But since it’s from Reuters, it’s hilarious:

Afghanistan’s only known pig has been locked in a room, away from visitors to Kabul zoo where it normally grazes beside deer and goats, because people are worried it could infect them with the virus popularly known as swine flu.

The pig is a curiosity in Muslim Afghanistan, where pork and pig products are illegal because they are considered irreligious, and has been in quarantine since Sunday after visitors expressed alarm it could spread the new flu strain.

“For now the pig is under quarantine, we built it a room because of swine influenza,” Aziz Gul Saqib, director of Kabul Zoo, told Reuters. “We’ve done this because people are worried about getting the flu”….

“Influenza is quite contagious and if it passes between people and animals then there’s no need for the pig to be here,” zoo visitor Farzana said.

Yes, and if influenza wasn’t also quite capable of being passed via a doorknob this might actually be relevant. The crowd is far more likely to infect you than the pig, even if the pig actually has the stupid thing.

If it’s the only pig in Afgan, then I have a hard time imagining how they think this pig will catch the disease….

  2. UNRR says:

It’s a good thing there aren’t more pigs in Afghanistan. Otherwise they might react like Egypt, and just start killing them all

  3. That IS pretty freakin funny.

“where pork and pig products are illegal because they are considered irreligious”

This is maybe the funniest part to me. A country’s government considering a type of food illegal because of the religion of most of its people.

really? they have only ONE pig in the whole country?
and they keep it IN THE ZOO? O.o this really blow my mind, problably my IQ is a little bit lower, now :D
i bet even monthy python could never ever imagined a sketch like this, this is far beyond any possibly logic….

  10. Hey, I look on the bright side of this. It protects the pig from getting the flu from any of the people there, which is much more likely, considering there aren’t any other pigs. XD

  11. Lorena says:

Maybe they think the darn pig is an American terrorist with contacts in the West.

    Hi All!

Breeding pig in islam is strictly prohibited. That’s why they don’t breed it. It’s is really a very good thing that they practice their religion unlike us.

    Thanks!
