Thank you for posting this. Absolutely gorgeous. It gave me chills.

  2. Ty says:

If you jump up in the air just before the rock hit, you survive. Just like a plane crash.

    • sps88 says:

No, that doesn’t work…you would still die, even in a plane crash, becuase you are still moving at the pace of the plane, so even if you jumped you would still hit the ground with the same force and you would still die, unless you use the safety positions in the manuals…but besides that, great short film…like it a lot.

    • imshandon says:

Please tell me you are no older then 10 or that at least you really do mot believe that statement……

    • Pokey says:

NO, it works, except for people that can not spell or have more than one typographical error.

      • Sahaqiel says:

Physics don’t roll that way. If this worked, then you would never be able to stand on an airplane. When you’re on an airplane, the only reason you can move like you’re on the ground is because you eventually move at the same velocity as the plane. In short, if the airplane were going at 110km/h, you’re moving at 110km/h. Without the plane, you’re still moving at that speed until you are stopped.
So, unless you can jump into the air at 110km/h, you’re dead.
Or if you can jump around that speed, like 105km/h, in which case you will be injured in some way.

        • Ty says:

Somebody took their hyper-literal pill this morning.

        • Sahaqiel says:

I don’t see how you can take “if you jump before you hit, you’ll survive” any other way than literally. :/
Stop trying to save face. It only shames you more.

          • Sunny Day says:

LOL, who’s trying to save face now? I

t was obviously a joke and now it looks like you’ve committed yourself to flogging someone for making a joke which you still don’t understand 4 months later.

You would make a great “Straight Man”. I wish you the best in your new career!

      • Anon says:

Not true, someone so versed in physics should know that air resistance would slow you down considerably along whatever horizontal axis you’re moving, the real problem is that no matter what, you’re going to hit terminal velocity, especially in this case with so much time for free fall. you hitting the water at terminal velocity will kill you, no matter what other velocity vectors are involved in the horizontal directions. As for jumping, every force needs an equal and opposite opposing force, the force of you pushing against air is almost insignificant in such a case, your velocity might decrease but immeasurably so. “jumping” in the air before you hit the surface, if you could time such a thing, would not save you.

        just sayin’

  3. claidheamh mor says:

I wonder if the creators of the film knew the Zen story of the Zen master fallen over the cliffside, grabbed onto a very tiny branch, which was about to break with his weight, while under him were tigers/crocodiles/whatever large carnivore fits the terrain. Just before the branch broke, he saw one ripe strawberry, reached out with his spare hand, picked it and ate it. How sweet it tasted!

Enviable and admirable as I find that fearlessness, my own outlook, like, doesn’t remotely come close.

  4. Reginald Selkirk says:

As a pedant, I must fight the urge to point out the improbable science aspects of this film.

  5. amon says:

    Beautiful, just beautiful

The parable of the happy asteroid teaches us to dance with clouds and smile at the sun, because the wind won’t be whistling through our fingers for ever (:

  6. Michael says:

    Amazing!

  7. How wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing. :)

  8. I discovered your blog via Twitter, Daniel, and appreciate it a great deal. This short was beautiful.

  9. Siberia says:

Very beautiful animation, very well done – you’ve to see it in HD to fully appreciate it. Thanks for sharing!

  10. The Dude says:

That reminds me of the whale in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

  11. Denis Belanger says:

Thanks for sharing this little gem.

You continue to share some really great material on your site Daniel!

  12. snekr says:

Absolutely beautiful! Reminded me of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as well. Thank you for sharing.

  13. Mike Caton says:

    That’s really beautiful!

  14. Oblio says:

Most XLNT short… many thanks for posting it! So many philosophical issues are raised in my mind while watching our friend plummet through the atmosphere. I feel he senses his ultimate demise, but revels in the glorious moment anyway. To me, that encapsulates how we should live each and every day — as if it is our last. Love the ones close to you and far away… help anyone who needs it, whenever you can… stop and look at the sky and remember how truly thin our Earth’s protective skin really is, and know that we too soon shall be doused out.

    AWESOME.

  15. Sgt Skepper says:

Reminds me of the whale from Hitchhiker’s Guide!

  16. SmartLX says:

Yeah, imagine if the whale from Hitchhiker’s Guide had stopped bothering to name things, realised what was going to happen and come to terms with its own mortality.

Reginald, perhaps silicon-based life can only function at white-hot temperatures. It’s an interesting thought – that perhaps abiogenesis happens all the time in the stratosphere, but we’ll never know because the end result is a rock at the bottom of the sea.

  17. Karly says:

What an achingly beautiful metaphor for life. That kind of complex beauty always brings tears to my eyes. Great post, Daniel.

  18. Herbie says:

Stumbled on to this site. Great short film. Really enjoyed it. Thank you

  19. edward says:

    Like the song says:
As he fell past the 25th floor, he said so far, so good…

  20. Michael R says:

    Embrace acceptance,
    Learn to release inner fear,
    Live for the moment.

  21. cjmac says:

this was really nice. short enough to keep everyone interested and the message was beautiful. im passing this on to people.

  22. Steve says:

Stumbled here too, with the attention span of …. ermm well your usual stumbler I rarely if ever watch more than 5 seconds of shorts, this is the first to hold me for duration in a long time, what a wonderful piece of work.
It would be interesting to see a few prequels, what happened on the way there or when the rock was first ejected from the oort cloud, through the orbit past the Sun….was he alone..

  23. Jo says:

Why not make the asteroid 1000x bigger, and all the people on Earth smile as they realize they are about to die? Cuz it’s completely un-f-ing-realistic, that’s why. I’m sick of sheeple praising some ‘deep’ film that doesn’t make any sense to begin with.

  24. Trin says:

that was so beautiful. I love the way he/she realizes that it is inevitable that it is going to hit the water so it enjoys the time it has before it happens and then goes out with a bang!

  25. sir jorge says:

    this is very cool, thanks

  26. merrick says:

very reminiscent of the whale scene from hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, i forget which book number. VERY similar concept. A incoming missile is turned into a whale and it goes over the whales thoughts as it is falling and they go along the lines of “oh wow, life is cool, i wonder what this wooshing feeling is! i wonder what i am but i sure do love life” and then it hits the ground.

  27. Jennifer says:

    Simply beautiful.

  28. Harrison says:

    Cool one,I liked it :)

  30. ANON says:

He wouldn’t have died if he had believed in our lord and savior, Jesus Christ.

    • Oblio says:

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Oh Anon… you myth-believers really crack me up! You should peruse this site for the posting on how immaturity seems to be a hallmark for people who profess total faith in de Bible. But no matter… you just keep that glorious vanity as your guiding light, and us heathens will just keep smiling.

      • Custador says:

Was ANON’s posting Poe, do you think?

        • Jabster says:

There does seem to have been an increased level of troll activity in the past month or so …

          • Custador says:

Could this be the concerted Christian attack on the atheist internet community that I’ve been hearing about? If so: Ooooooh, mercy.

            /sarcasm

            • Jabster says:

It could be as only yesterday I found a comment by a believer (possibly a Catholic) that said “he couldn’t care less if all atheists where dead” therefore I believe that the Pope wants all atheists dead … erm come to think of it his posting handle was Vatican001 … I wonder?

            • Oblio says:

A very good friend of mine, educated at Notre Dame, is now a hard-core Pentecostal and evangelizer who is totally against the idea of global climate change, the theory of evolution, a woman’s right to choose and any scientific advance that pre-empts his beloved scriptures. I ask him how he can ignore his extensive education, modern scientific progress and teachings in lieu of a 1600 year-old manuscript that he considers the center of his human core. The blank stare I get back is simply irresistable!

            • Tom Coward says:

Or, Anon could be being sarcastic.

            • Custador says:

@ Oblio: I have to ask, why stay friends with an ass-hat like that?

            • Oblio says:

Heh, Custador… a very good question. Actually, I have many family members and close friends who are VERY RELIGIOUS, but they also understand that I have the capacity to accept and love them irrespective of their beliefs, as they do of mine, or my lack thereof.

It’s like their initial vehement opposition to homosexuals and gay marriage… my questions to them were: Why should ANYONE be solely defined by their sexual preferences? Are heteros defined solely by that measure, and if not, why not? It’s not a question that is easily answered by the faithful, because they can’t understand the nuance of human sexuality… it’s de Bible or nothing, and any variation causes them cornfusion and great anxiety heh heh hehy… love dat!

            • Custador says:

I went the other way with my uber Christian family. It reached a head when my cousin started quoting No Intelligence Allowed (the anti evolution propoganda piece) at me. I wrote a piece for unreasonablefaith about it, actually. After I cut him off, the rest of the fundies followed in short order. Life is simpler now!

            • Oblio says:

10-4 to that… I would have done the same thing in the past, but after losing both my younger brother and Mom in 2005, I realized that I need all the fambly and fiends (heh) I can get, so I remain expansive and understanding with all the Beeble-Thumpers in my life.

  31. ANON says:

    LOL, fags

  32. ANON says:

    Hey, Oblio, guess what…

  33. ANON says:

Seriously, I enjoyed this video. I happen to be a non-believer myself (the particular reasons for which I’ll leave unmentioned), and, like Oblio, have many friends and family members whose faith in the Christian god is strong. Some I debate, some I let have their beliefs without confrontation. Each has their own rationale for their conclusions, and I won’t argue against them for that. What I refuse to accept though is that life has no purpose, or that we are somehow lost in the perceptibly near infinite vastness of this physical universe. By no means do I imply that we are guided by some divine force, but I simply believe that we are the architects of our own “destinies.” As the creator of this video posits, we can, and indeed MUST look forward with every action we take. It is our duty to experience to the fullest of our abilities all that our conscious moments have to offer. So no, we are not products of some mystical being, but, by our own right, we are divine. We, as human beings, and even further still as conscious, self aware, intelligent, and creative beings, can claim our own divinity in this universe. And, while our purpose is most likely not dictated in the annals of some outdated text, which, by the current standards is irrelevant based on our current system of morality, our scientific discoveries, and by the true nature of humanity itself, our purpose is still blindingly clear. As we as human beings have the ability to move beyond our own weakness and even beyond this world, we must make the future a brighter, more open and more knowledgeable place for everyone regardless of beliefs, regardless of social context, regardless of race, and especially regardless of all the ignorance, violence and hatred that this species is already known for. That is our purpose. Also cocks.

    • Custador says:

Lol! Best ending ever to a philosophical soliloquy!

      • Oblio says:

Heh… perhaps, but he still looks undernourished. Mebbe needs a big bowl of matzoh ball soup! In support of Anon’s observations, I offer this nugget:

“When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, ‘This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,’ the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything – you can’t conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him.”

 from the 1940 novella ‘If This Goes On…’ by Robert A. Heinlein

  34. Francesc says:

“we must make the future a brighter, more open and more knowledgeable place for everyone…”
    Thats our purpose? Why?

  35. Great movie, loved every second
