    Great song.

  2. My personal favorite is A Perfect Circle’s cover of Imagine.

I found that breathtakingly good. Anything that really speaks eloquently to me what I was thinking and feeling, in a new way, can be dark like this, or satirical, or humorous. In the words of Ray Bradbury, it can slam me back against my mental wall.

The altar boy, so cute, looks like he isn’t going to be a pushover for abuse any time. The young man who doesn’t swallow unsubstantiated mythology anymore. The first person showed not quite crucified, but up in the tree, an older woman, like so many living in or near poverty. (Wonder how many are the backbone of support for a church that profits the ones in power, who are not elderly women?)

The reference to possible mind and intelligence and supreme being in the universe, completely severed from this sick mythology about it called christianity, directly addressed: “YOU know it’s a crock too”.

    Love it!

  4. Nice to see a good 80′s song coming back to the surface. :-) I have always loved this song… even when I was a Christian I loved it (of course, I loved it for the sound, not the message, mind you). Thanks for posting this… great Friday music.

  6. andrew says:

I hated the music/singing, but the lyrics were interesting. for another song that asks good questions check these lyrics out:

    Band-These Arms Are Snakes
    Song-Perpetual Bris

    You were born from sin.
And if that ain’t a curse,
then I don’t know what is.
Like Abraham and altar and the son you can’t keep…
Would the shepherd shed the blood
    of his most precious sheep?

Did Job ever ponder the price of his piety?
    Was Methuselah tired?
    Did Lazarus want sleep?
Praise be Thomas for fingering the wounds
because if he had his doubts then perhaps you should too.
Does the bride beg for a barren womb?
Did God give the gift of a gamble to you?

  7. Jeff Lightfoot says:

The album this is featured on, Skylarking, is great. One of my favorites of all time. Also Sarah McLachlan covers this song on one of her albums.

  8. Siberia says:

Excellent song. Had never heard it – thanks for sharing!

  9. marie says:

Wow, haven’t heard that in awhile. Still as catchy as I remember it, but I never really paid attention to the lyrics at the time.

  10. Lorena says:

The song is full of quotables. Never heard it before, but I think it is quite good.

  11. Rik says:

One of the best songs by one of my favourite bands. Exquisite taste, Mr Florien!

  12. Rik says:

They also splendidly wrote ‘Jumping In Gomorrah’. It’s on the 1978 album, ‘Go2′.

J.U.M.P.I.N.G. jumping in Gomorrah, I’m religion free
J.U.M.P.I.N.G. jumping in Gomorrah, I’m religion free

    Bring your horn of plenty
Gold calves, if you got ‘em
    We’ll get stuck in history
    All aboard for Sodom,

    Bring your burning bush,
    Harlots if you’re able
    We’ll get stuck in history
    Next stop tower of Babel

J.U.M.P.I.N.G. jumping in Gomorrah, I’m religion free
J.U.M.P.I.N.G. jumping in Gomorrah, I’m religion free
    All aboard for Sodom

I think that song got played once on the radio in the town I grew up in. I tried for months to get them to play it again with no success. It probably ticked off the folks who broadcast the Catholic mass on the same station.

  14. zack says:

good stuff guys, more post like these please. :]
its hard to find music like this.
    thanks.

I’m a huge XTC fan and I have been for about 30 years, now. After all these years I still expect to hear the ‘tick tock’ intro of “Dying” at the end of this song. It’s been too long since I’ve enjoyed Mr. Partridge and the lads. I’m off on to listen to Mummer!

  17. Bissrok says:

I keep trying to recommend this to Christians, but apparently a lot of people have heard this before (and liked it), so my evil plot hasn’t quite worked yet.

  18. Heidi says:

I never listened to the words of that before. Thanks. I like it much better now that I paid attention.

  19. Adam says:

I first heard of XTC a long time ago because of this song. There was some christian show on public access putting this video down while trying explain it. They talked about how XTC were Devil worshipers etc…. I was like “don’t they say they don’t believe in him either”? I would LOVE to find that version of the video again.

So now I love this band because of those idiots. Thanks!
