This is incredibly fucking scary. I’m starting to think there’s no hope for atheists at this point.

  2. DownHouse says:

This is frightening. I’d really like to think that it isn’t true…but if it is, everyone needs to hear much more about it.

  3. green411 says:

democracy seems to be less and less real to me the more I think about this kind of stuff.

  4. Travis says:

well, if this is true then wow.

BUT… if were going to tell religious people extraodinary claims require extraordinary evidence as a counter to there beliefs, then we really should do the same thing here. Is there any other sources that back this guy’s claim up?

    • DownHouse says:

I agree. I’ve been trying to find more evidence of this beyond this guys book and Wikipedia but so far no luck. Every article and blog reference I find lists Sharlet as a reference. Maybe as this gains momentum we’ll see more names pop up.

As of right now it seems just a little too crazy.

  5. green411 says:

well Bill mentions how he is the only one pursuing “The Family” so it makes sense thats all you’ll find, doesn’t make it wrong just because its under-developed.

  6. Offred says:

This video gives you the basics of their beliefs

Loren Cunningham founder of Youth with a Mission (which owns C Street)
Bill Bright founder of Campus Crusade and Francis Schaeffer

This video is pretty good too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQbGnJd9poc

  7. Jing-reed says:

There is more about christian fanatics and the military in the Harper’s article by Sharlet [May 2009] ‘Jesus Killed Mohammad’ [subscription only], but also available at http://www.rigorousintuition.ca/board/viewtopic.php?p=260335&sid=67f06ab32131b9c3f8c06a80ec12b0d0

It the the oft repeated story of the religious right and their ‘blinders vision’ wherein anything is permissible as long as it is done in the name of Jesus. Politicians, military, and Blackwater’s mercenaries all gleefully singing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’…. Appears they are intent on out-Talibanizing the Taliban.

  8. Fentwin says:

Who was it that said fascism will come in the form of a cross wrapped in a flag?

    • DownHouse says:

“When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.”
      -Sinclair Lewis

  9. nelly says:

Rachel Maddow has been covering the “Family” for over 2 weeks now

    • DownHouse says:

The only source I’ve seen cited in her reports is Sharlet. I’m glad she’s reporting on it. The more people who ask questions the better answers we’ll get. I’m just not seeing a very diverse list of informants.

  10. Yoav says:

How doe’s that work with the regular line about how without god there is no moral and atheist are by definition evil just look at Hitler, Stalin, Pol pot etc. fundies like so much.

  11. rodneyAnonymous says:

“…morality is for the little people.”

    :o

  12. Michael says:

    Scary stuff…

  13. Olaf says:

Please donate all your money on my bank account. I am a chosen one, you will be assimilated. resistance if futil!

Wierd. Conspiracy theorists find all nonsese conspracies, but if one is staring in their face like this one they don’t see it!

  14. Keauxjak says:

normally when you take a lot of acid in life, you feel gulty and want to repent but your head is so f’d up that you end up seeing godlike figures. the christian movement was the result of taking lots of acid.

  15. Atticus says:

Great, now I have to move out of the country.

  16. idea1013 says:

As soon as I saw this interview, I went out and picked up the book. The content is terrifying! As for those questioning the sources, he documents all if it very well. Much of the information about the Family itself comes from the archives the Family keeps at the Billy Graham Center Archives along with his personal experience at one of the homes for young men and historical background of fundamentalism, revivals, and leaders of the movement.

  17. fantod says:

C Street has featured in several of the latest Doonsbury strips this week.

  18. What I find so odd is that Sharlet’s book has been out for so long, this stuff isn’t new. But nobody wants to touch the story really.

    • Nobody in Particular says:

Nothing odd about it at all. It took Mark Sanford “Hiking the Appalachian Trail (TM)” to get the ball rolling. For some reason, it usually takes a sex scandal before anybody pays attention to anything…

  19. Winthorpe says:

“To the pure, all things are pure.” Titus 1:15 I’ve heard this justification more than once from Xtians.

  20. eclairevoyant says:

My only consolation is that there is not much documentation that this group, which seems to have been around for about 70 years, has been able to do any real damage to or through our government. Still, it is more proof of the insidious nature of religious zealots to “make things into their image” and damn the rest of us. Religious terrorism at its best! There never really has been separation of Church and State, only the illusion.

    • Michael R says:

I agree. When such a large percentage of the population is xian, how can the government, which is comprised mostly of xians, actually keep religion out of our political process? It’s an impossibility, at least considering the gross hypocrisy and lack of genuine concern for fairness and equality that I’ve repeatedly witnessed amongst the religious. The xians in this country strike me as being power-hungry and immoral. Yet they claim to be meek and moral. If the devil actually existed, his magnum opus would have been creating religion.

  21. Will Powers says:

Thank goodness for the copyright Nazi’s. I make my living in the creative arts. I get paid when someone uses my creative efforts. Bill Mahr has the right to make money from his creative efforts, too.
