Oh dear, what a complete and utter pri*k Bill O’Reilly is. I can’t believe he’s stupid and smug at the same time; I really can’t believe he implied Dawkins was in some way a fascist.
Well, the only improvement over the usual Bill-o tripe was that he didn’t explicitly use Argumentun ad Hitlerum. Came close with calling Dawkins a fascist, though!
I like both guys. Bill is entertaining. Richard is there to sell books. In any case Bill is using the god of the gaps argument. If we don’t know goddidit. I wish I was born a thousand years from now. I bet we’ll fill in most of the gaps by then. Give us a million years and we may acquire the knowledge to create universes ourselves.
I think O’Reilly considers “turning” to something as being converted, but otherwise, we should parade theories in front of children (present) and ask them to choose one they like. Sounds like asking for an opportunity for a sales pitch.
I also like the part where O’Reilly slips and admits that the existence of Jesus doesn’t logically enforce a belief in God. However, since O’Reilly idolizes Jesus, he believes everything Jesus says.
My last bit: O’Reilly needs to look into behavioral evolutionary biology. It uses science to reinforce a lot of human behavior. This in addition to some basic sociology allow science to explain how and why we shape our morals a particular way.
Excuse me if any of this is preaching to the choir, I’m new to this site.
Dawkins missed the opportunity to call O’Reilly out and say:
“Fine, if you want to teach all the alternatives, teach ALL of them. Teach the Norse creation myths, and teach that the world rests on the back of a thousand turtles, and teach that Allah created us from a clot of blood, and that Athena sprung from Zeus’ head … and so on and so forth until you’ve taken up the entire science class addressing all possible alternatives to evolution. That’s the key.”
It amazes me that O’Reilly can at once rail against the equal opportunity religious displays at Christmas, and out the other side of his mouth say and “we need to have ALL alternatives in the science classroom.”
Doesn’t he realize how self-contradicting he is? What a fool.
Ya that was my thought if your going to teach alternative explanations regardless of how silly teach ALL of them. I’m sure O’Reilly, being “fair and balanced” would agree. ;)
The same thing occurred to me. Had O’Reilly allowed Hitchens to finish a sentence, maybe this would have come out. Anyone who frightens him, he interrupts.
man, elliot, you are so right. billo doesn’t know squat. according to him you would have to include aliens and ufos. primitive natives believe in totally different higher beings and spirits. thousands of beliefs by thousands of groups. leave religion out of the schools period. stick to what we know and not what was written in a book that was re-written over and over. we have facts about evolution. we have absolutley no facts about religion. not one.
billo is a clown and a bully.
Once again, I’m moved to say: Morons like that *actually* get on prime-time TV in the States and *get taken seriously*?!?! I am NEVER moving to America.
Yeah, but c’mon – the man’s on Fox! Fox, for crying out loud! The Broadcasting Complaints Commision in Britain would tear them appart for that one interview alone!
free speech. and he has a massive audience elmenope – his ratings have beaten the nightly news on cbs. he’s a good guy in my humble opinion but just plain stupid on the whole religious issue. Yes, Jesus had some good teachings but come on – son of the creator of the universe?
Looking at this year’s numbers, he hovers around a 3 million audience (call it the ‘Obama bump’). In a country of 300 million, that means he’s reaching about 1% of the population. And that’s a *good year* for him. For comparison, this year CBS news has had an easy 5 million, last week 5.7 million.
We have got them it’s just that we try not to give them thier own TV shows and as Custador has already said any show with this content just wouldn’t be allowed on air; well maybe on Channel 5 at 12 o’clock for the post-pub crowd.
I almost made it to the end, but the constant repetition of “BY YOUR OWN ADMISSION” to statements that Dawkins never said finally made me lunge to close the window.
All the comments I could make were more elegantly presented by Dawkins’ facial expressions in response to O’Reilly.
If you youngsters don’t know who Ted Baxter is.. google it. For those of us old enough to recall the Mary Tyler Moore Show, the analogy could not be more perfect. And what’s really amazing is that the source of this quote is none other than….
Short version: O’Reilly, who took an oath before his god to be faithful to his wife, basically phone-raped a woman working with him on his show (after harassing her in person naturally). She got it on tape and as a result FoxNews had to pay her a small fortune.
I dream of the day when one of Bill’s guests brings that up.
not to mention his “unchristian” attitude in relating “kindly to others” vis-a-vis his daily demeanor & supporting the murder of a physician; but then, we do know that fear is a result of ignorance.
the facial expressions wer quite entertaining: billo looking like the grade-school snot who LOVES to tattle on his classmates and dawkins with his perpetual WTF look. LOL.
*sigh* Fascism is getting thrown about far too often these days with no apparent knowledge of what the word means and how a fascist would actually act.
Bill there is hinging his entire belief system on whether or not science can tell him “how it all began,” but any nut can make up a creation myth, the very fact that scientists don’t attempt to shows that they, at the very least are honest in their lack of knowledge.
It works like this, if ‘science’ can’t tell you the exact answer then you can make any old shit up and claim it as fact; if science can tell you the exact answer the you get to claim you’re being persecuted and you must teach the controversy.
Please not that this only applies to your own religion and not others which are obviously wrong.
Much as I can’t stand O’Reilly, he often at least has some degree of debate on his show, unlike, say, his rival Keith Olbermann who shuts out any real dissent from his show. O’Reilly’s interviews with Hillary and Obama were surprisingly revealing. Even when he was a disrespectful buffoon it worked because he pressed them in precisely the way the buffoons are always doing but not to their faces. It was great to see how deftly they handled the buffoon challenges. I actually learned about their positions. It was one of the points in the campaign where Hillary really impressed me.
But in this interview with Dawkins, wow. I mean, no debate at all. Just profound, on the sleeve insecurity. No pretense of being able to either hear or withstand a counter-argument. He decided from the previous argument that the only thing Dawkins didn’t have an answer for was he source of all being. So, he highlights this supposed “gotcha” at the start and just reiterates it with shouting for a paltry 5 minute segment, jumping from one wildly illogical and pathetic assertion to the next every time Dawkins tries to get a word in edgewise. It was a mockery of a discussion because of O’Reilly’s overwhelming insecurity. I hope the viewing audience could see what was going on with O’Reilly barely letting his guest finish or develop a single idea without O’Reilly leaping wildly to another variation of the same basic, illogical idea he was resolve to pound into the ground from the start.
I’m quite surprised that Bill admitted to believing in evolution, even a god-driven variety. I was fully expecting him to say that he thought it didn’t make sense and believed in creationism.
I’ve never liked Bill, but at least I can respect him for generally providing decent arguments. He’s comparable to Michael Moore I think, in that he is very sensational and incredibly biased, but he does stick to the actual issue at hand and even periodically makes some good points.
Well, he’s a Catholic, so unless he thinks he knows more about their dogma than the Pope (and some Catholics do), he should support an old Earth and evolution as God’s method of creation.
The problem is what does the idiot actaully think evolution is. I wouldn’t be surprised if what he meant was he believed in micro-evolution not macro evolution and then went on about kinds of animals and magical barriers. Of course he wouldn’t define what any of these terms mean in much the same way no creationist will every define what a translational fossil is but they know there aren’t any of them.
That Richard continues to appear on such shows demonstrates his sincerity in reaching the uneducated and the deluded. If he were just out to sell books, he’d not choose such an unpleasant venue. He’d do like Billo and Comfort and Ham do, and market to a friendly audience.
I don’t remember Jesus teaching creationism as part of the bible.
And the same logic that says we have to teach the ku-klux-kristian version of creation in science class could be used just as strongly to say we have to include the mayan creation myths, the hindu creation myths, the sumerian creation myths, the various creation myths of Native American tribes.
Because science cannot answer every question in now way means that we must present as a valid theory that “it was magic.”
I wonder if O’Reilly is stupid. A 3-year-old can see that if you don’t know something, you don’t just fill it in with any wild and unsubstantiated theory. No matter how many people believe it.
In my country in France there is no presenter like Billy OReilly he would not be more than a day on tv, he would be considered as a racist and facist, he hates black people and all minorities, he represents the wrong image that european have about america (racist, self centered, puritan and conservative) while majority of american people are nice and hard working. I deeply think its an error to give a job like that to a guy like him on a famous channel like fox.
Oh my God! What is this?! Some People actually don’t believe in God! :0 Why…why this is an outrage! These heretics, these “un-believers” should be burned alive at the stake. I mean HOW DARE people question the existence of a omnipresent all-knowing all-powerful GOD that is always referred to as a male & never a female. HOW DARE people have a mind of their own & have different beliefs from mainstream institutionalized religion. Haven’t these people read the bible? Its 100% historically accurate & the catholic church insists that the bible remains unchanged after 1000 years. I mean the church wouldn’t just change whatever they wanted in the bible to suit there own agendas would they?
Thankfully I don’t live in America. So I don’t have to put up with the agonizing torture of imbeciles like “Simple Bill” on my Television every night.
Oh my gosh! I never realize how accurately Colbert portrays this wacko conservative pundits!
He hardly gave Mr. Dawkins the chance to put a word in, and he paraded his ignorance, not as if he believed in God, but as if he were God.
superbly put.
why does he even bother with that twat! Billy calls himself a christian yet he give off the “vibe” that he doesn’t know what to believe.
O’Reilly is such a boob.
Oh dear, what a complete and utter pri*k Bill O’Reilly is. I can’t believe he’s stupid and smug at the same time; I really can’t believe he implied Dawkins was in some way a fascist.

Give us a million years and we may acquire the knowledge to create universes ourselves.
Odds are that’s shooting the moon. (The making it a million years part, not the creating universes part.)
Hey didn’t we shoot the moon a couple days ago?
Ironically.
I think O’Reilly considers “turning” to something as being converted, but otherwise, we should parade theories in front of children (present) and ask them to choose one they like. Sounds like asking for an opportunity for a sales pitch.

Preach it, Brother!
Amen!

Massive audience my right eye.
Keith Olberman gets twice him numbers:D Yay for reason!
Obviously I need to focus on UK nutjobs more.
We have got them it’s just that we try not to give them thier own TV shows and as Custador has already said any show with this content just wouldn’t be allowed on air; well maybe on Channel 5 at 12 o’clock for the post-pub crowd.
Is that a promise Custy? :) ha, all the best bro…
I almost made it to the end, but the constant repetition of “BY YOUR OWN ADMISSION” to statements that Dawkins never said finally made me lunge to close the window.

I unfortunately saw this yesterday, and don’t plan on seeing it again.
The logic Bill O’reilly uses is disgraceful.
Our policy should be to ignore people like this.
Dawkins comes across as such a gentleman. Are those dinosaurs on his tie?
He had crocoducks on the tie he wore on the Colbert interview last week.
No, those aren’t dino’s, that’s the croc-o-duck tie. If I wore ties, I’d want one. Can I get crock-o-duck PJs?
“Bill O’Reilly is Ted Baxter.”
If you youngsters don’t know who Ted Baxter is.. google it. For those of us old enough to recall the Mary Tyler Moore Show, the analogy could not be more perfect. And what’s really amazing is that the source of this quote is none other than….
Rush Limbaugh.
Bill O Reilly: I’ll give you the last word
Richard Dawkins: Bill, you’re a fucking idiot
In the perfect world
It’s laughable. Bill gets his morality from Jesus? Well once again Jesus fails:

yikes. i can’t look at Bill O the same anymore
not to mention his “unchristian” attitude in relating “kindly to others” vis-a-vis his daily demeanor & supporting the murder of a physician; but then, we do know that fear is a result of ignorance.

There is one very scary part of this interview.
Bill openly accuses Dawkins of fascism when he rejects the concept of biblical teachings in a science classroom.
Atheists, liberals, scientists are the communists of the 2000′s. We are fascists simply because we don’t agree.
It is alarming that he could say something so horrendous in public and not get sacked.
My young lady is reading over my shoulder and would like to agree with you :-)
*sigh* Fascism is getting thrown about far too often these days with no apparent knowledge of what the word means and how a fascist would actually act.

ummmm…. the last sentence should have read “in NO way” rather that “in NOW way”…
Proofread, proofread, proofread!
Glad you clarified … I thought that science could not answer every question in a Scandanavian nation.
