Actually, the main opponents of slavery in the US were Republican. Although the party platforms have remained more or less the same, what is considered “conservative” and what is considered “liberal” has flip-flopped at least once, I think more times, but I am relatively unfamiliar with US history.
(Slavery is “un-Christian”, but really it’s quite Christian but “un-19th-century-worldview”. Morality obviously changes independent of Holy Text and therefore can’t be its source.)
