    Broken linky, bro.

  2. RogerE says:

People have been saying things like this for decades if not centuries. I especially remember “The Shoes of the Fisherman” a 1963 novel by Morris West.

  3. brgulker says:

Probably the best thing Silverman’s ever said, IMO.

  4. David says:

Sarah Silverman so rocks. She is just joyously funny.

  5. The disgusting thing is it might actually work… and it will NEVER happen.

  6. RICHARD FRANCE says:

ITS FUNNY, BUT WHEN EUROPE WAS GRIPPED BY THE INQUISION, THE KING OF SPAIN SENT AN ARMADA, BLESSED BY THE POPE, TO BRING THE INQUISION TO ENGLAND, THIS WAS SUNK IN A FAIR FIGHT, AND NOW LIES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGLISH CHANNEL, THE YEAR 1585 CE !!!! SO WE KNOW WHICH SIDE G-D IS ON !!!!!

  7. Dani says:

Gosh darn. Thought this was a blog for thinkers:

    * The Catholic Church already feeds more people than any private institution in the world. In the world. There’s not even a close second. As a Church, of course we could do more. But we are doing something – and its a lot of something. Silverman might give credit where credit is due.

    * Silverman likes quoting Christian sayings back to the pope – does she know about motes and beams? I’m curious how much of Sarah’s profits, including her movie profits, have you used to feed the poor? If she is tired of seeing starving people on TV, what has she done about it, besides uploading a self-promoting video to YouTube? Shouldn’t those who work to feed the poor be outraged at the antics of Silverman, when she uses the plight of starving people to further her own popularity and distract from their needs?

    * At the end of the day, it’s just a really stupid idea even in itself. The assets of the Vatican (St. Peter’s Basilica, etc.) don’t have a fair market value. Who is going to buy the Vatican?

I’m sure the Italian government could find some use for the space.

The Catholic Church already feeds more people than any private institution in the world. In the world.

      Citation, please.

Re: Silverman, I’m pretty sure she’s never claimed to be the earthy emanation of a Deity’s will on Earth, so I don’t think holding her to the same standard as the supposedly holy Roman Catholic Church is exactly appropriate. And even if it were, since when does pointing out that a critic falls short make the criticism they made less valid? Does the Catholic Church suddenly become less ostentatiously, disgustingly wealthy simply because Silverman is revealed to also have money?

    • Monado says:

One of those Sheiks with 100 gold Cadillacs would probably love it for a second home.

    • Reginald Selkirk says:

Who is going to buy the Vatican?

My first guess would have been Liberace, but he’s dead.

  8. Laura says:

The Vatican is worth approximately $900 million. To feed the world, you would need $44 BILLION. You do the math.

Despite the fact that selling the Vatican wouldn’t actually end world hunger, I LOVE her point! If you sold the Vatican and all the megachurches, THEN maybe we could end world hunger! Either way, well said!

    • Elemenope says:

The 1994 Price Waterhouse audit of Istituto per le Opere di Religione showed receipts in deposit of $40 Billion. This figure does not account for any real estate holdings the church may have. The Church proper has substantially less, probably around $850 Million, most of their finances being handled through the IOR.

  9. billybee says:

This is Silverman at her best….comedy in the absurd. Too bad her bit here sails over the heads of squares. Hard to believe that some people think she is serious……wow, just wow.

  10. Monado says:

Makes sense to me. And tax churches, balance the budget! Other private clubs aren’t excused from payng taxes.

  11. Jerome says:

The Catholic Church is founded, in many countries, by state taxes!

  12. VidLord says:

If you’ve ever been to the vatican you know the utterly absurd gold and wealth display – despicable….disgusting – positively retarded and entirely – HUMAN.

    • L. Jerome says:

      Word.

There are plenty of signs saying you can’t photograph or you must be silent because it is a holy place; then 10 feet later you are forced to walk through a gift shop where they whore out merchandise. Incredible. Gift shops every few yards. Didn’t Jesus lose it and start flipping tables when people were selling stuff at the temple in the new testament?

I bet they could make a lot selling all of the pagan/Roman/Greek art they stole/pillaged.

  13. Mark D says:

We could also sell Israel back to the Arabs.

  14. nazani14 says:

I must object to dispersing the Vatican’s wealth, much of which is in the form of art. At present, just about anybody can see an incredible array of masterpieces, which, if sold, would disappear into private collections. The fine manuscripts are fairly accessible, too, if you have a genuine research project. It’s a shame the Heidelberg library was looted, but if these manuscripts had remained in Germany they might have been destroyed in WWII. I know the golden monstrances, etc. offend some people, but again, look at them as art. Melted down, these incredible creations would be worth only a fraction of what they are worth as fine art.
Much of the ancient art was unearthed right there in Rome, but yes, the ancient Romans stole many statues from Greece. Many more items are gifts to the Vatican from various nations.
I’m an atheist, but I would support the idea of the Vatican collections being maintained even if the Catholic church utterly collapsed. As is, the treasures are reasonably well guarded and conserved, and free to see.
