I was wondering how they’d approach the implicit contradiction in the fact that zionist jews and christians seem to get on so well together despite the whole idea of dispensationalism being so antisemetic – The last two sentences of the film answer that issue perfectly: “To Jewish Zionists the Christian Zionists are useful idiots. For the end-timer Christian Zionists, the Jews are sacrificial lambs.”
You have to laugh at the idea that Israel gave Jerry Falwell a Leer Jet as a gift even though his whole doctrine basically decrees that Jews are a lesser species than Christians and that they were basically only created so that God could punish them for constantly failing, despite the fact that he supposedly created them to fail… Theists, hey?
Like that rabbi in ‘Religulous’ who went to Ahmadinejad’s conference and otherwise thinks that Hitler was God’s righteous punishment to the Jews for leaving the Holy Land. Being the worst racist, chauvinist or wannabe genocidal maniac is permissible if you dress it up in religious conviction. It is perverse that an ideology that would be immediately condemned and probably lead to legal action regarding secular political opinion can just glide along comfortably and even be lavishly rewarded when wrapped in stuff made up as long as the words Jesus or Mohammed are mentioned somewhere.
It always make me mad when I see the bastardization of the word zionism by these nuts (both Christian and jewish fundies). Zionism was started as a secular movement influenced mostly by the ideas of 19th century europe rather then religion. Since despite the way Israel is usually portrayed most of the jewish population is secular as are the top elected official (an openly religious person has no chance of being elected to the top spot of the major parties which is the way to becoming prime minister) I can see the temptation of using the influence of the fundie Christians with the clear knowledge that we don’t need to worry about the end of world fairy tails. I do agree that by taking their money politicians are pushed toward a more extreme rightwing policies regarding things like settlements etc. just like a politician that take oil money is more likely to object emission control regulation but as you can see from the example of Ariel Sharon, who used to be one of the heroes of crazy right in Israel, when they think it’s in their best interest politicians will evacuate settlements in a heartbeat and we no regard to theological arguments.
Zion? is a place in Christ, a spiritual high ground in the way that Jerusalem is geographically speaking a physical high ground in Israel. The climb is steep, the cost very high.
But you dont believe Wazza, so how could you possibly know what Zion really means friend? You dont believe but pretend to know even though you wont believe so that you can (really) know?
You’ve bound yourself to the physical but His is an inward, spiritual kingdom that one may enter in upon that “narrow way”. All the best Wazza.
well, it’s a word, which means that its meaning can be determined through linguistic study, and generally Zion means a mountain in Jerusalem, though lately it has come to mean the city as a whole, or even the entire state of Israel. No one but you, J, has defined that word as meaning something spiritual (though many have placed spiritual value in the real objects that go by that name).
What you have in fact told me is that I have to decide that Zion means something spiritual before I can realise it means something spiritual. Your whole system is a peculiar house of cards, built on nothing but playing with words, arbitrary decisions about belief, and quite likely temporal lobe epilepsy.
though, uh, I don’t want you to take that the wrong way. You’re still a pretty nice guy. But I can’t have any respect for your beliefs… they just don’t make any kind of sense.
No worries friend, they thought He was nuts too, ha. I understand what you are saying. You hit on the essential difference. You and I live from two distinct realities. While I am familiar with your world and reality (the natural, visible realm) you are not yet familiar with mine (the present reality of the kingdom of God in the here and now which is a spiritual kingdom since God is Spirit, Christ teaching that the kingdom of God was within us).
And since mine is foreign to you, you (innocently) assume that I must be suffering from some condition, a malady of sorts, ie a “temporal lobe epilepsy”, etc but I assure you I am as whole and healthy as ever thankfully. But here’s the truth, the difference. I have (foolishly, childishly, implicitely) trusted Christ’s life (his nature) and words taking him up on the offer he made (which has nothing to do with religion) resulting in an outrageously liberating, life experience (not that I have fully arrived by any means, nevertheless I press on). So when I say (seemingly crazy) things like “Zion is a high place in Christ” it will naturally be dismissed as a nutty comment, again I understand.
So I’ve left one realm, one kingdom for another and am progressively transitioning more and more day by day. The further “out” I get the more liberty I experience and the nuttier I appear to you, ha. So yes, from my vantage point I can assure you that Zion is most definitely a high place in Christ to which I am (daily) ascending but to you it is something entirely different so I will have to say…you are right! ha.
I appreciate you Wazza, journey on friend! All the very best.
There are all sorts of reasons why one might agree with one side or the other in the conflict going on in the Middle East. God, however, shouldn’t be one of them.
Great video, it does a really good job of shedding some light on the evangelical dispensational movement, which is pretty much the majority rule here in the south. Thanks for sharing.
What is truly scary is how this belief has affected American foreign policy.
It may have been one reason Harry Truman (a Baptist) recognized the state of Israel in 1948. And many leaders in the conservative movement often promote end-time prophecy books to their followers.
There are still many people in America, who if they don’t believe in the rapture, still believe god gave the Middle East to the Jews. America is the most pro-Zionist country in the world.
The “Left Behind” books sold some 65 million copies. Yet the America press never investigated the theology or history of the “end times” belief system. They seem to give uncritical attention to LaHaye and company. But the press does seem to do the same for new age beliefs.
I once meet an employee from The Learning Channel at a local bar. I told her about many of the topics covered in this video. I reminded her that after “The Da Vinci Code” was published, many documentaries were made about the claims in that book. (I am sure one reason was to make money)
Then why not give the “Left Behind” series the same treatment. The “Left Behind” books are actually dangerous, because people who believe in the theology could once again have their finger “on the button”. But nothing happened and still few Americans are aware of the problems cause by “End Times” beliefs.
Better the Americans should throw their spare cash at Israel than use it to buy more house and senate seats.
Can you imagine what it must be like to be an Israeli tour guide, leading the fundies around and knowing that they expect you to convert or die? I’d become an alcoholic.

no, Zion is an actual mountain near Jerusalem. There’s no support for any other interpretation.

Bad asterisks.

I can tell you that when Bush was in charge of the nukerler button, the fact that he believes in the rapture was not an item of comfort to me!
