You forgot that women who are not proven to be virgins on their wedding night can be divorced or killed. Funny how the bible goes into so much detail about what to eat and what not to eat, how we should dress, etc., but doesn’t find even one place, in the entire bible, to mention:
1. That slavery is a bad idea, and immoral;
2. That women are equal to men;
3. That the earth revolves around the sun;
4. That the earth is round;
5. Basic science like the link between germs and disease.

Yes, my dad was an evangelical pastor, but it wasn’t until I read the bible for myself that some of these issues became glaringly obvious. Still took another 15 years to really sink in, though…some of us are slow learners. I remember one day just realizing that I KNEW the whole thing was an enormous hoax, and there was no residual fear “what if they’re right after all?”.

The Old Testament is full of examples of people being cursed or killed for no other reason than them living in a specific city or country, belonging to a certain tribe, or being descendants of someone. I heard this years ago from some film-student christian who wanted to go down to Haiti and do a documentary about it, he also wanted to look into the voodoo practices because people were ‘raised from the dead’. When I asked him how he knew they were dead, and not just putting on an act for tourists, he said “there was a doctor in the video that confirmed the guy was dead before the ritual.” I check out of the conversation at that point, but I’ve always wondered where he got this cursed Haiti idea from.

Try to grasp this: There are about 20,000 nuclear warheads currently in existence, but only around a quarter of that could actually be deployed at any one time (i.e. mounted on a missile and fired or onto a bomb and dropped). Even if all 20,000 went off at once, at least 15,000 of those would have limited effect because they’d detonate underground and do relatively little real damage. If the remaining 5,000 went off air-burst (the most damaging way to detonate a nuclear weapon), they’d have a total yield in the 200 megaton range – which is about the same as four large volcanic erruptions (Mount St. Helens yielded about 50 megatons of thermal energy) – except they wouldn’t throw up the associated volumes of ash and debris. I think you need to stop watching those McCarthy era “Duck and Cover!” videos.
Incidentally, the largest nuclear device ever made was a 50 megaton device called the Tsar Bomb. It was 26 feet long and weighed in at 27 tons. Not the sort of thing you can simply strap to a missile and send on its way.

I been flipping between the evening political talkshows over the last couple of days to see how they portray the situation in Haiti. On Wednesday both Olberman and Rachel Meddaw dedicated a large part of the program to the situation in Haiti, which continued last night as well. On the other hand Bill O’rily completely ignored Haiti on Wed and had a regular show spent on how great was Sarah Palin’s first day as a fox noise commentator and whining about evil liberal John Stuart for being an Obama protectionist and calling Fox out on distorting history by claiming there were no terrorist attacks on the US during the Bush years. By yesterday they figured out that they can’t ignore it anymore so they mentioned it but the whole show was loaded with innuendoes echoing rush limbaugh (I guess even Billy is too embraced to go down the pact with the devil path) with lines like: He reacted faster to the Haiti earthquake then to the underwear bomber, Of course he should have reacted fast but…. He also jumped on the ‘we sent all that money that just went to the corrupt government and any additional aid should be controlled by the US’ basically calling to a takeover of Haiti. He obviously hasn’t mentioned the role of the US and other western countries in making Haiti into the poor country it is. Pat Robertson – I believe that if evil exists, it is personified in this man. He made similar comments about New Orleans after Katrina. He has not an ounce of empathy and seems to come alive when people are suffering and will twist any traumatic situation to support his superstitious beliefs (which sound pretty ridiculous, by the way, and his comments have been condemned by most christians I think). He is either a sociopath, and completely without conscience, or he is a sadist. In either case, he is beyond help. Sometimes I wish there was a hell so people like this could know real suffering. There was a story of a Haitian man whose wife just got back from New York. She was in school and the building collapsed. He spent hours calling her, and then he heard her call from under the rubble. He spent all his money paying people to help him dig her out, for about 8 hours. By the time he got to her, she was in critical condition. He carried her to three hospitals plus a military hospital, but they were all over-full and refused to help. She died in his arms. CHRISTIANS WHERE WAS YOUR GOD???????????????????????????????????

No, Janet Greene. I was not born into it. I was raised pagan but my mother who held a Baptist faith. I can’t speak for the others, but I would bet that not many of us on this blog are pagans. They were polytheists and believed in supernatural forces to explain their world. I believe that most, if not all, things can be (eventually) explained through natural forces and can be proven by the scientific method. However, on the plus side, pagans did not kill other groups for believing in different gods, and were far more tolerant and generally less violent than the monotheistic religions (who insist that they all worship the “one true gawd”.

Here the word is placed in the plural since the thought of a “one-horn’s” single horn seems to make the phrase “horns of a unicorn” self-contradictory. Still, the original Hebrew has the word in the singular so that we must speak of the “horns of a unicorn,” which makes it clear that a unicorn has more than one horn (1968, pp. 186-187).

You have an obsession with Truth (capital T), which is usual in people who insist on an unequivocal, absolute Truth, handed down by God himself. Most of us recognize there’s no such thing as absolute truth. Most of us also distinguish between facts, opinions, and ethics, whereas you simply jumble them all together in one big pile which you label “The Truth”. I very much doubt they mean it literally (that is, an apocalypse, a revealing of that which is hidden). They just mean it as a short-hand expression for large scale suffering and death of a natural origin.
