I thought that the ties between the Vatican and organised crime were well known already; can’t say that this comes as a surprise.

Why would anyone be surprised by this?
I’m not at all surprised by the accusation or the high probablility that it’s true. I am surprised that the Vatican is allowing this story to make it to the media. I would have expected a few timely “natural deaths” to occur.

Catholic Church bringing back Plenary Indulgences
Of course these indulgences are not being handed out for cash, that would be corrupt. Rather, these indulgences must be earned by visitation to holy pilgrimage sites such as Lourdes.
In entirely unrelated news, the Vatican now runs an airline which flies religious pilgrims to holy pilgrimage sites such as Lourdes.
Hopefully this will lead to further investigation and transparency, particularly about the actions of the Vatican Bank during and shortly after WWII. The Vatican Bank cannot be audited, and its officers are immune from prosecution because they hide behind diplomatic immunity. No one should be above the law.

Having your own country can be really convenient.
I have to say, I’d be surprised if quite a lot of looted and stolen money / gold / artworks which actually belong to other nations or Jewish families aren’t hiding in Vatican Bank vaults. At least Switzerland is making some attempt to return some of it.
I guess the Vatican Bank wouldn’t take Vladimir Putin’s money.
