Little “atheist” girl. But where did it come from, how does she know, she was never taught any of this, just the opposite? Her childlike imagination? What is the human imagination anyway, a portal, a window, to what? What is the message that she is heralding and why can’t we “hear” it? Where do fairy tales come from? Hmm….
And they all lived _________ ever after… (the power of choice, of agreement, its astounding).
Notice that the girl claims that God is masculine, strong, large, and beautiful. She is simply idolizing the same traits people have for millennia, the same traits that so many people lack. The problem with assigning God traits like these is that it naturally excludes most of the world, most people who are not masculine, big, strong, or beautiful.
But is this just her personal fantasy coming out, her delight in color and art? I don’t think so. God is always described as incredibly powerful and large, and also always male. He is so beautiful that nobody is allowed to see his face, and only Moses could even see his back.
And nor is my concern over discrimination unwarranted. The church has always persecuted groups that do not fit their standards. Women, because they are not masculine, were not allowed to speak in church or have control over their household or family. Even today, most Christian groups believe the man should have the power in the relationship, and Catholic priests are all male. Similarly, men viewed as too effeminate have been downcast, from the eunuchs hailing way back to gay men today. Notice that the stigma against gay men is far worse than against lesbian women, and that is because masculinity is held as an ideal. Associated with masculinity is strength and power, which are seen as being good rather than destructive. Job is told that he has no right to justice because God is so powerful, and that chapter from Amos you quoted goes on to describe various power relations such as the lion and his prey and the bird in a trap, ultimately finishing with God and humans. Since Christianity’s establishment, the most powerful have been idolized and worshiped. Even today, the disabled are viewed as essentially inferior, a burden on society. We may have a few wheelchair ramps here and there, but for the most part, people are not willing to deal with people they see as weaker than the rest of society. It is even worse in the institutions where most of us end up–”nursing homes” where people are moved away from society and where they often suffer horrible negligence and mistreatment. And tied into this all is the concept of beauty, a tricky concept which inevitably describes–you guessed it–the most masculine and strong men. The weak, the small, the disabled, the genderqueer–everybody who is not stereotypical is marginalized by a bronze age concept of beauty. And it is religion that is the greatest contributor.
What does this say about the existence of God? It says that if he does exist, he is not making the world a better place. And it also says that this girl’s vision is not unique or even interesting, and if anything it is destructive. And it says that the concept of God that you hold and so many before you have held is creating an idea of normalcy that damages most of society.
I do not usually evangelize, but I often think the world would be a better place if there were more atheists.
Her paintings tell truths of what are imaginations. I’ll leave the wirings of her brain alone even though I have doubt of her mother one-sided confessions.
Her paints are truly, amazingly beautiful, but they’re not at all different from art of the last four or five centuries – she’s not portraying anything new or unique, even if she *is* ridiculously talented…
There’s cynicism rearing its ugly head once again. Keeps one jaded, in the dark. Its a destructive, harmful trait that cynicism. God has no selfish, manipulative motives, is completely trustworthy, only longs to give you Himself, His very life, nature and love.
You are assuming god exists.
In this case it is very logical that the mother claims to be atheist before so she can sell the paintings for a higher price.
I don’t think so, and here’s why: In my experience, Christians who actually give enough of a stuff to do that kind of thing hold atheists in such contempt, and honestly believe us to be so entirely without morals, that they could not do a passable impression of an atheist anyway. I suspect they’d give themselves away by trying to be as immoral and uncaring as possible in the genuine belief that we’re all monsters.
Most christians are too frightened to read or think outside their little christian box. I know – I was always like that. I felt terribly guilty doing something un-christian, or having doubts! God forbid. That was the only unforgiveable sin – if I had died during a moment of doubt, I might have gone to hell!!! (gotta love the sweet peace of salvation in christianity, doncha?) But they have reason to be afraid, in my view. Once a christian has the guts to read outside his or her comfort zone, they may never be the same. That’s what happened to me, anyway. Edward Currant – love ya!!!!!
Brings an interesting thought to my mind. Why will any believer think or venture outside his belief since faith and fear can be used interchangeably(same driving force)?
During those times of my old faith, I fought vigorously against “doubt”.
My deconversion years are a bit of a blur…I remember reading books by John Shelby Spong and Celia M. Murray Dunn (Religion that Harms, Religion that Heals – for the first time, analyzed the pschological damage done to children by growing up in a christian home – hit me like a ton of bricks). But I was still worried that the christians might be right (in the back of my mind – the whole Pascal’s wager thing). I do remember the moment that I was certain christianity was a sham – that was a wonderful, freeing moment. I felt a little like Rechelle on “My Sister’s Farmhouse” – free at last, thank god I’m free at last!!!!!
Am I the only one who finds it ironic that Christians supported you while you were sarcastically bashing atheism, but when they finally realized it was sarcasm they insantly flood you with comments saying you need to “respect” their beliefs?
See, you confirmed Christian-psychology; they will support you if you seem to disrespect their enemies, but it’s beyond the crime of rape if you speak a word against them.
Like I mentioned in a comment (above), in protestant christianity the only unforgiveable sin is doubt. You can be forgiven for murder, incest, cruelty, violence of any kind. That’s A-OK (Christians: “We’re not perfect, we’re forgiven!!!”) But anything that creates doubt in the mind of a believer…well, there is no forgiveness for that. It’s the ultimate thought-crime – disbelieve and burn for eternity. That’s why they fight people like Edward Currant (or Daniel on this site) so vociferously.
wow, this makes my faith in christians (not god the people) plummet. i just hope the majority aren’t like that. the bible says nothing about attacking people or such because they aren’t christian. you can believe whatever you want to but that doesn’t mean because you aren’t christian your the devil trying to eat your soul. these chistian bigots make me sick. they say love thy naibor and then add in their own bit “accept the non christian who isnt the idealistic idiot”.
personally i think if christ did come back he would be disgusted by the common current christian but on the other hand if christ was powerful enough to come back then he also probably wouldn’t be surprised.
my religion is yoga in daily life and i’m not hindu… more of a christian buddhist who likes yoga.
Yep, you betcha. And these simple folk look to other simple folk to be their leaders (they can relate to them – not all educated & book-lerned & stuff). This is when it becomes dangerous for all of us.

You get to fill in the blank! (hint…Amos 3:3)
Love ya guys today…yes I do!

Are you saying only divine intervention could explain why she’s so good at art?
Odin works in mysterious ways.
> “Where do fairy tales come from?”
Erm, yeah, are you sure that argument counts in your favor?
It’s obviously some form of mild autism. And apparently her parents are zeaoults about it too. Sad really.

*paintings
Smells like a setup.
The mother claims to be atheist before but could be a marketing trick.

And the motives of God can be known how?
Pray that sinner right into the cornfield!
Edward Current is a genius :D I love that there were Christards who thought his videos were serious – and they liked them! Brilliant :-)
Custador,
Thank you for adding “Christards” to my personal lexicon. I will use it often.
Use it carefully; it doesn’t refer to all Christians – just the really zealous and really stupid.
Which category do I fall in to Custy? Or both? lol
You’re unique and defy categorisation :-)
Question: Is it possible for a christian to set up a Fake Athiest site? and not have it be as obvious as our Lying Pastor Chris Fox?
I don’t think so, and here’s why: In my experience, Christians who actually give enough of a stuff to do that kind of thing hold atheists in such contempt, and honestly believe us to be so entirely without morals, that they could not do a passable impression of an atheist anyway. I suspect they’d give themselves away by trying to be as immoral and uncaring as possible in the genuine belief that we’re all monsters.
They probably try this, but I don’t think that they keep it up because they could become an atheist the more they learn about evolution and science.

During those times of my old faith, I fought vigorously against “doubt”.
But something else drove you forward, because you’re here now….
Yea and you got me thinking of my past faith, is it my gut or truths behind circumtances, incidences or maybe experiences?
Glad to be free from it all any how.
My deconversion years are a bit of a blur…I remember reading books by John Shelby Spong and Celia M. “…that was a wonderful, freeing moment.”
I suddenly felt I can be myself. The tedious part is that it takes years for me to undo my faith(spent too long a time and effort in the bible).
It’s never too late for me to unlearn and relearn new things.
From his channel comments, by user TKOblue:

Why write a book? There’s already fstdt.com
Because it’s not a book.
I love the way Edward Current doesn’t take himself seriously. However his mind is brilliant at satirical comedy.
Thanks for posting this, I have been watching Edward Current’s videos now throughout the morning. They are hillarious.

Wow… I’d like to buy apostrophes for most of those commenters. Apparently belief in a higher being trumps basic grammar skills.
My favorite quote from his video: God Doesn’t Exist? Prove It!
“If something feels better, it must be true!”

“Simple folks want simple answers to complex questions”
