Brain Games

I saw an ad for Lumosity a few weeks ago and it’s the first ad I’ve clicked on in years. It’s a service that uses games to help your brain (like reflexes, memory, problem solving, etc). It tracks your progress over time so you can see yourself improve.

I have no idea if it really works (do you improve because you get better at the game, not because your memory is improving?) but it’s fun and interesting to see your improvement over time.

Do you have a favorite brain game? If so, what is it?

I like the one we’ve been playing for hundreds of years. A 20 minute chess session every morning gets my brain working in the right direction.

I don’t mind playing a ruthless game of ‘concentration’ with my eight year old once in a while, but he always whoops my hiney.

    Chess and Sporcle.

They say that doing crossword puzzles can ward off the onset of alzheimers disease. I prefer numbers of the Su Do Ku variety, which I think helps me de-stress. It’s got to be better than sitting in front of the TV!

I like to play the ancient Chinese game of Go (wei qi). If chess can be described as man vs man, Go is man vs himself (or herself as the case my be).

Professor Layton and the Curious Village! =P
I enjoy playing scrabble with friends as well. Oh the times we have.

I picked up sudoku about two years back. I would almost finish a puzzle during my population biology lecture every week.

    1. Sporacle (Son introduced me to this just last week! The second I click “Start” I freeze! I’m 50-ish and menopausal — I cannot retain things the way I used to. Pisses me off!).

    2. Sudoku

    3. Crossword puzzles

    4. Scrabble (weekly, after dinner with my Mom)

Never did learn how to play chess. It’s quite the thinking man’s game. Maybe someday.

    It’s called Lumosity, not lumINosity.

    As for me:

Brain Age 2: A DS game that puts you through several mind tests and gauges your “Brain Age” over time depending on your performance. The ideal brain age is the 20s. It also keep track of you progress and compares you past scores.

Boxing: As in the combat sport. I find that it requires quite a lot of concentration to constantly check that my form, posture, and ranging are done properly. I also find it a good test of willpower.

  13. WMDKitty says:

Crosswords. And, uh, does Tetris count?

  14. Athena says:

    Sudoku, crosswords, cryptoquotes, and Scrabble.

  15. Jerdog says:

My favorite site to really work my brain is perplexus.info
We have a nice community of problem posers and solvers. If you’ve done one regular SuDoKu you’ve done them all.
