Geologists Accidentally Opened the “Door to Hell”

There’s a crater in Russia that has been burning for 35 years:

For decades, the fires within the pit have been burning without end, fed by a seemingly unlimited pocket of natural gas. The “Door to Hell” might easily be placed among the world’s most incredible natural wonder–that is, if it wasn’t man-made.

If this is hell, where are all the kinky torture parties those books and kooks keep talking about?

  2. José says:

At least they use clean burning natural gas in hell.

    “..if it wasn’t man-made.”

    Natual gas is man-made…lol…who knew?

    It’s in Uzbekistan, not Russia.

Why isn’t some of the energy of this heat being captured for electricity? An old-fashioned steam turbine could generate a lot. What a waste.

Wasn’t Dante’s lowest level of Hell frigid ice wasteland? In a land of permafrost you would think that would be the indication the doorway to hell was there.

    Wow, that’s interesting.
It actually looks like it’s close to Darvaza, Turkmenistan.

Harnessing that energy does not seem likely. There does not appear to be much for population centers around there and just getting control of that blaze must be a challenge. Just look at Centralia, PA. That coal mine fire has been going since 1962. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkHfnp2czZQ
