Jesus Tote Bags

I don’t understand how people can (1) design these and (2) buy them. However, I bet they point out good targets for swindlers.

  1. That Walk Disway one is a lawsuit a-waitin’ to happen.

For whatever reason, most companies are reluctant to press lawsuits against this kind of “Jesus junk.” My guess is that it would be horrible PR.

What’s the problem? It’s roughly equivalent most ThinkGeek merchandise, or shirts from Hot Topic. If I’m allowed to have “Everyone is entitled to my opinion” on my shirt, I’m allowed to have a corny religion shirt. The copyright issue? It’s a parody. People do it all the time. I still think the shirts are stupid, but no more stupid than any other shirt.

    • Thegoodman says:

True its a parody, the issue is that they are getting rich off of selling another company’s likeness. Its illegal as well. They get away with it because of the bad PR for suing a profitable Jesus loving business.

There is nothing wrong with a parody so as long as its just for fun or to make a point. The wrongness is in making a profit on it and it is the same as stealing imo.

      • Kodie says:

I’m not sure if that’s how fair use works. They can parodize, and they can make money from it, but they can’t pretend the company whose logo they are using actually endorses the product/belief, and they can’t use the logo to sell something which actually competes with the registrant of the trademark. I.e., if they are not selling clothes detergent, it’s ok, if it’s also a parody or whatever. I mean, they can’t put the Tide logo on a box of cereal and “unintentionally” lead consumers to believe Tide makes a cereal. I’m not sure where this stands with fair use and making consumers believe Tide endorses Christianity from putting it on a tote bag or t-shirt. I am just saying stuff, now someone figure it out and summarize this.

As it seems the person on whose website these examples were found is a Christian, but does not think very much of the tote bag “format,” I’m not sure too much about bad PR. I think a marginal population would boycott the original products if they challenged and won the copyright case – I would hope most normal people understand you just can’t steal registered trademarks, nothing against Jesus, per se.

Walk Disway? I see a lawsuit coming. Aerosmith would not be pleased.

  7. LRA says:

Tithing.. cuz Jesus was all about paying money to cleanse one’s soul…

    • DShell says:

I never understood tithing. God has a ‘Creation Week’ creating everything we see around us. But, the dude isn’t fiscally responsible? This sounds like another bailout to me!

      • Yoav says:

Not a bailout, just good old fashioned nepotism. Moses come down from the mountain and in one of the first thing he does is appointing his brother high priest, making the title hereditary (Leviticus 8) and have god murder anyone who try to challenge that appointment (Numbers 16). He also declare his clan in charge of the temple and order everybody else to tithe 10% to support them as a parasitic priestly class (Numbers 18).

    Ugh, *gerk* Christian humor… *shudder*

I remember it, and hated most of it when I was one. It’s as lame as ever.
