Cult Leaders and Popes

If you have a few hundred followers, and you let some of them molest children, they call you a cult leader. If you have a billion, they call you Pope.

    Awesome! I must memorize.

Yeah…I put something similar on facebook a couple weeks ago, after quoting some lame xtian site on why bad things happen (some babies are deformed because adam & eve sinned but we should pray god can use such things to his glory. huh??) & one of my lite friends responded that not ALL xtians are like that & I should learn that, etc. We worked it out. We’re both essentially saying the same thing – those crazy xtians are really CRAZY, but…it’s like you’re standing around with a female friend &, upon seeing a group of fat women, observe that some women really are too fat. And she responds, “I’m not fat!” Hey, never said YOU were. Evangelicals maintain they represent every good xtian, which is only in their dreams, then when you criticize, more moderate xtians seem compelled to defend their beliefs, when I imagine that for many moderate xtians, the extreme beliefs are just as much of a pain to them as they are to us. (this may not be too clear, I’ve got a migraine that’s chewing up brain cells…)

Sam Harris makes a good argument for how the moderates enable the fundies.

    • Brian says:

Moderate or not it’s all the same barrel of shit called magical thinking.

I’m a big fan of Bill Maher. He’s off the deep end on vaccinations but aside from that I like what he’s saying. I also think of myself as a left leaning libertarian.

Was it this comment that got him in a lot of trouble or the time he called the pope a Nazi? Either way, it was accurate, and it annoyed me that the network got pissed due to complaints and if I recall correctly ordered Maher to apologise. If people complaining about what is true is going to get us to censor and censure ourselves, why do we even bother having, say, a history channel? Just about everything on that is offensive to someone, even if it’s true.

  4. JoeB says:

I wish Maher would only talk about religion, but instead it gets to be a love/hate relationship.

  5. MarkD says:

So the pope is like David Berg, but with more followers?

    • Custador says:

More like Karesh. Now all we need to do is see if we can get the US government to start rolling Bradley Tanks through the Vatican and life will be lovely :-)
