Pseudoepigrapha and Video Games Don't Mix

by VorJack

Via Game Blend, a new video game is coming out that is based … excuse me, “based” on the Book of Enoch:

El Shaddai: Ascension Of The Megatron Breathtaking Debut Trailers

The book of Enoch was one of the coolest books of the Bible no one ever got to read in the original KJV. Nevertheless, Ignition Entertainment is taking the missing book of Enoch and turning it into one kick-butt game called El Shaddai.

The book of Enoch is originally what spawned great works like The Divine Comedy, and subsequently, Dante’s Inferno. The new game based on the book follows Enoch’s journey to bring back the soul’s of the original Fallen Angels whose actions ultimately resulted in the great flood.

Alright, number one: That’s Metatron, who appears in 3rd Enoch. Metatron is supposedly Enoch, who was taken up into heaven and exalted to become one of the God’s highest angles, or even a lesser God. He is described thus:

This Enoch, whose flesh was turned to flame, his veins to fire, his eye-lashes to flashes of lightning, his eye-balls to flaming torches, and whom God placed on a throne next to the throne of glory, received after this heavenly transformation the name Metatron.

Or you can just think of him as Alan Rickman from Dogma:

Megatron is a Transformer. He’s the leader of the Decepticons and violates the heck out of the law of Conservation of Mass by transforming into a handgun.

There’s a little bit of a difference.

Honestly, they could have made a better plot-line by inventing new fiction instead of using old stuff…

  2. dart says:

Could be a reviewer’s typo. You know, Transformers on the brain, just happened to replace that t with a g…
I hope it’s not actually ‘Megatron’ in the game, because IIRC Megatron is copyrighted and that means trouble.

  3. It is Metatron in the game. Looks like it could be a cool game, I hope there’s a demo.

  4. Sunny Ng says:

Great, now I got Frank Welker’s voice in my head.

  5. Siberia says:

Actually, if well done, it could be a badass game.
Emphasis on ‘if well done’. I doubt it. But Dante’s Inferno was a good game – and they’ll apparently do the rest of the Divine Comedy as well.

There are all sorts of bizzaro early Christian scripture out there that would make good inspiration for games. I recall reading some apocalyptic literature that mentioned beings changing gender and self-inseminating. Wish I could remember the title.

    • Luna says:

Gender changing happens in quite a few places in early Christian lit. At least, from female–>male, not the other way around. In the ancient world, the male gender was associated with purity and the divine, so you frequently have holy women portrayed as males.

Perhaps the most prominent is in the Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas. Perpetua has some crazy visions of herself, in which she sees herself as male. Some of the Sibylline oracles also have some gender changing. The Acts of Thecla include cross-dressing. I don’t recall any self-insemination–but I think it would have to be found in either a really early text (unlikely–we don’t have many non canonical texts as early as I’m thinking) or something after the backlash against asceticism began in the late second century.

What amazes me more than anything else, is the quacky things christians will think up. Hasn’t anybody noticed all the stupid and brain dead ideas that they have conjured up out of thin air to justify their personal rightiousness? Equally so, does anybody ever notice that what they do conjure up can NOT be established or mandated in the New Testament? Jesus said to not hate….they hate; he said forgive….they don’t forgive; he said do not judge….they judge, anyways…..so what the hell do they stand for, if not Jesus and what he said, then what? The biggest goofy idea is that Jesus died for your sins…..no where in the entire New Testament or in what Jesus said, does it establish that dumb conclusion! And yet, day by day, they think up even more stupid concepts and ideas that have nothing what so ever to do with “god’s word”!

Now there are computer games to frighten children into following their web of deceipt and hatred! They tried in literature, movies, rock music…..etc. The only thing they haven’t done is tried XXX rated films….oh wait, I forgot….”The Passion of the Christ”…..silly me!

Give them some time and they think something up that will make us all wonder if they even graduated kindergarten! Notice how they are not concerned with tattooed people eating shrimp on the Sabbath! Oh darn, I may given them something to start a holy war with!

Just confirming, is that bit true? (I’m a bit busy to check now.) And if it is, then where the heck the idea come from?

In the early christian era, the Gnostics(the first christians) believed that the way to “salvation” was through the spirit or christ. The spirit did the guiding of the individual and not the Old Testament or the LAW(law of Moses). Most christians of the time were pentocostal or spirit-filled, which is what I see as being horribly disfigured today by “christians” fundamentalists. This is the catch phrase: “fundamental”. Many schools of christian thought existed in the early era, for example the school led by Valentinus. As a Gnostic, I have found my understanding to be quite close to what Valentinus taught. One faction that did spring up were the “literalists”(fundamentalists) and they believed in reading the “bible” literally. Before they grouped together along with the Emperor Constantine, canonized the bible and deified Jesus, they had abandoned the need to be spirit-filled. Along with Constantine, the newly formed Catholic Church went about crushing all those who were Gnostics and destroyed all their writings. Once they had given up the notion that one had to be spirit-filled to be “saved”, it was just a small matter creating a new religion based on the Old Testament. The writings of Paul and the gospels suddenly became unintelligible and unlivable. So they turned to the Jewish book and built a new faith based on sin, sacrifice(Jesus’ death), rightiousness and redemption. None of these concepts were ever given top priority in the New Testament. It had been written to help the spirit guided “believers” or Gnostics. The early Catholic fathers dispised the Gnostics and brutally wiped them out, forever wiping the uncontrollable(this is the catch!) faith from the earth. How can you control people who don’t listen and follow doctrine? Simple….kill them and burn their writings. Strangely, they didn’t realize that the documents that were kept and compiled for the New Testament were by and large ALL Gnostic documents. Keep them in Latin, don’t teach Latin to anybody and man fell into the dark ages. There are over seventy Gnostic documents that were dispensed with and were either destroyed or buried in the Vatican vaults! If it were not for the great discovery in 1945 at Nag Hammadi, Egypt of some of these Gnostic documents, we might never have found out what Christianity was like before the Catholics foisted their sickening religion on us! Modern day christian doctrine in all it’s forms is based on Catholic Doctrine and not at all similar to the christianity that the apostles and disciples knew and lived! The concepts of needing salvation and redemption through mere belief would have been completely foreign to the early Gnostic Christians. When the New Testament was written down, there was already talk of the “anti-christ” and that it may have already been in the world at that time. Simply put, those that do not live by the spirit or christ(Paul used this word to indicate the spirit of god within us) are the “anti-christ”! Modern day christianity is in fact the “antichrist”! Ironic, isn’t it….how they think that the “anti-christ” will make trouble for them and they don’t see that they ARE the very thing they fear most!!
Paul said: “Christ in us, the hope of glory” and “Those in Christ Jesus”, these sayings were symbolic of the spirit(Christ) in the physical being(Jesus). The indwelling Christ is the guide to perfection…..no other way was possible, especially not by just reading a book and believing every word contained in it.

The early or first christians were Christ guided, as they spoke in tongues and prophecized. They believe that God spoke to them through others and never through the written word. This was faith alive and powerful. But thanks to the Catholic Church, we have all been wounded by the insanity and heartlessness of an inhuman, unthinking, stupid religion! God to the Gnostics is nothing like the over blown evil demi-god that the fundamentalists have beaten us up with! Evil comes from man and not from some boogey man called the devil.

To the Gnostics, hell was looked upon as our physical existence and heaven was our spiritual existence. They didn’t have a “hell” crasher, nor did they believe that if you didn’t follow them, you went hell to burn for all eternity! They did have a healthy distrust of anything to do with the physical world. Their primary purpose was to allow the Christ(spirit) to help them evolve and find spiritual perfection in their very physical lives.

So now, which version of christianity appeals to you? The fundamentalist….believe in Jesus, or you’ll burn for all eternity OR the Gnostic……find spiritual perfection through union with the Eternal(god, the divine, the big banana….names didn’t mean anything to them)? Plainly put….the New Testament was written by Gnostics for Gnostics and NOT for the christians that have made up christianity for the last 1,700 or so years! Modern christians can not follow or obey anything that is contained in the New Testament because they ARE going the wrong way!!

    • Ty says:

“The biggest goofy idea is that Jesus died for your sins”

Depends on who you consider a valid source.

Paul flat out states that Jesus died to reverse Adam’s sin.

But I have noticed lately a growing trend in theology to sort of discount anything Paul says that no one else says.

      • michael says:

To the Jews, not to the gentiles which, according to Paul, were not under the curse of the law. Besides, if you read that phrase literally, you will get no where just as the “christians” today have gone no where with it. Today’s christian view is that Jesus died to wipe out the curse of sin. So why do they still talk about sin and impale their victums on this issue. Are sins gone? Was the death of Jesus in vain? The entire christian doctrine is based on sin and they admit to still being able to sin!

Gnostic Christian view: If the spirit/christ guides you, you are unable to sin! They believe in spiritual growth and evolution and NOT in judging their fellow man. They can not judge as no one can see into another’s spirit. Only the Eternal One can see that! As to Paul’s statement: Put to death the desires of the body(jesus) and the curse of sin is wiped away. In puting to death the body’s desires, the Gnostic no longer gives into his/her corporeal nature but now relies on the spirit/christ to guide them to spiritual perfection. Jesus is symbolic for the body, christ for the spirit. To the Gnostic, we are already in hell(corporeal existence) and growing into the spirit of the Divine, he/she achieves heaven(Christ) in their lives.

In the book of Galatians 5:22-23, Paul writes of the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness…..etc. How often have you seen christians displaying these traits? Do they show these traits when dealing with gay people, evolutionists, abortionists, liberals, socialists, free thinkers, people who disagree with them….etc? By these fruits of the spirit will you know those who are led by the spirit. Furthermore, Paul states that if there are those still do sin, they are
the children of the devil(not of the spirit). There is no actual devil, as this is a representation of the physical nature of man. You must look BEHIND the words to see what it really says. Do not read the New Testament literally or you’ll end up going no where, really fast!

Now, which “christianity” do you prefer?

  8. Michael says:

I feel like Paradise Lost would make a better game than The Book of Enoch, but I guess we will have to wait and see.

    • Elemenope says:

The OT (or the Qur’an for that matter) would make a neat Total War game.

      • Michael says:

I can see Persia Total War or something like that being neat. The Hebrews (or perhaps separately Judah and Israel, depending on the time period) would just be one of many playable nations. It could definitely work.

Of course if you go too far back, those iron chariots will be unbeatable.
