Jay Smooth versus Roman Polanski.

Double linkage from me today, folks.

In the wake of this absolute travesty of justice, I wanted to sum up my feelings about the whole Roman Polanski case – and then I remembered that Jay Smooth over at Ill Doctrine has already done it so much better, calmer and more completely than I could possibly hope to do:

Yeah, I remember seeing this when you posted it in-thread a couple of months back. It is an excellent perspective on the case.

    • Custador says:

The most relevant part of this speech is that “He did it while she was saying no and telling him to stop… That is a description of a rape”.

  2. Chris P says:

How is this a “Travesty of Justice”? The US fails to provide adequate justification to a very stable and non-violent country. The US is NOT the “fairest” country on the planet.

    • Custador says:

Read the story, dude. Switzerland could not rule out errors in the extradition process. That doesn’t mean that The US failed to provide evidence (they hardly could since he’s already admitted he did it) – it doesn’t even mean that they made any errors. The whole thing stinks from a country famous for protecting the rich and their money.

      • Tee says:

Have to agree with Chris. The USA is NOT fair when it comes to such things (have resorted to kidnapping in the past to get the person they want) and maybe if they got rid of the death penalty and had a better/fairer justice system other countries would be more apt to work with them. Hell when Polanski was a French citizen the French government said Polanski could be prosecuted in France if the U.S. authorities so requested. Of course the U.S. authorities declined that option…..

So instead it’s just the typical USA bullying others into what they want (just like that Fay kid in Singapore).

Good for the Swiss for standing up to the USA. IMO this has little to do with what Polanski did but more of a statement from the Swiss saying we won’t be bullied.

        • Custador says:

Okay, you need to A) Read the story and then B) Watch the video. Polanski has been repeatedly given the option to return to the US in order to close proceedings and been given a guarantee that he will not get any more jail time.

Focus on the issue here: Polanski RAPED A THIRTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL. Not “statutory rape”, not “drunken date rape”, ACTUAL RAPE. The fact that he drugged her was incidental to the fact that she was SAYING NO AND TELLING HIM TO STOP. That. Is. A. Rape. And he has ADMITTED TO IT! So why in the blue hell should he not be extradited and tried for it? What, for the sake of political point scoring?

        • Peter Cross says:

… but more of a statement from the Swiss saying we won’t be bullied.

          For the right price.

    • And how exactly is it unfair to prosecute a man for raping a 13 year old girl?

    • Kodie says:

I don’t think the fairness of the US has anything to do with the fairness of what the Swiss do. I mean, two wrongs don’t make a right, tu quoque, whatever you want to call it. If it’s rape, justice ought to be served by someone, not held back because the US may not always do the right thing either. Childish, well he started it, they lied too, etc. It’s not a valid argument for whether who should do what when. In the ideal world, justice should come over political revenge, or whatever this amounts to.

  3. Brian says:

People who rape 13 year olds tend to do it more than once. Why should a guy like that get a pass?

  4. matt says:

Didn’t watch the video, but the only real travesty of justice was the original plea deal. And even that was a routine deal. Happens all the time. Sad but true. My own plea deal last year was also a travesty of justice. But plea deals save the courts and the prisons time and money.

  5. LRA says:

I refuse to watch Roman Polanski films because he is a rapist.
