“People like blood sausage. People are morons.”

  2. arrakis says:

I have a friend who is a “moon-landing-denialist.” I have presented him with all of the evidence, plus scientific answers to all of his objections, but, of course, it doesn’t change his mind. Very much like most creationists in that sense.

  3. Hannah C says:

Myth Busters completely demolished this conspiracy theory a couple weeks ago. It was a great episode, actually! =]

  4. objectifier says:

I have seen two “documentaries” on this subject. One from some folks who really don’t believe it happened called “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon” that was pretty poor. A second which I believe was done by CBC was actually about the way “documentarians” like Michael Moore can misrepresent footage by cutting things together to make them appear like they support the claim. They took an interview with Nixon’s cabinet and cut in different questions to make it appear that they were freely admitting and laughing about having faked the whole moon landing. Sadly, their fake was more believable than the one by the mood landing deniers. It had some other interviews similarly treated with the same question substitution method of some hollywood folks who were supposedly responsible for the faked landing.

It makes a nice analog to those who deny science, holocaust deniers and other Luddites who want the world to fit their preconceived notions and myths.

  5. Nelly says:

    the video was very funny.

the reality that people still think we didn’t go isn’t.

I got in my SIL’s face over it (he and his “clan” of northwest hicks). I’ve had the honor of chatting with Neil Armstrong and John Young when they came to NASA Dryden for a workshop. Amazing men.

  6. Mike says:

Mythbusters did not demolish the assertions made by the denialist. I personally do not believe that we can prove that we did not land on the moon, however; Mythbusters performed poor science at best. For example, they performed the footprint experiment at NASA itself as if this was going to be a neutral environment. NASA denied Mythbusters the opportunity to use real moon dust for the experiment, but offered them another form of dust, which we are to take on faith as being similar and not tampered with. NASA may have cooked up this fake moon dust in their lab in an effort to skew the results in their favor. Can we really expect NASA to be neutral? Are they going to take the risk of Myuthbusters finding that a footprint cannot be made in this type of experiment? Again, it does not prove that we did not go to the moon, but it does demonstrate that Mythbusters is a stupid joke. Their primary incentives are to entertain and please the status quo. Do not believe everything that you see on television.

    • Ty says:

      Please.

A moon hoaxer talking about good science?

“I personally do not believe that we can prove that we did not land on the moon, however; ”

You’re right. No one will ever prove that.

However, we have proved that we actually did land on the moon half a dozen times, and we’ve proved it over and over and over again.

Go spout your woo somewhere where someone will buy that tired shit. Cuz this ain’t the place.

    • Nelly says:

      are you kidding me?

the amount of moon dust is very small in comparison to the rocks brought back. It was more incidental during collection of the various types of rocks. To offer any amount to anyone except geological scientists would be idiotic.

By understanding the composition of the rocks and dust collected, it is relatively easy to duplicate an almost exact duplicate for the purpose of debunking the ignorant idiocy of the denialists.

People with basic understanding of science and old farts like me that witnessed the events, coupled with extremely educated scientists debunked these loons long before Mythbusters had their stab at them.

      • Nelly says:

my apologies for using “duplicate” way too many times………..I really wish Daniel would offer a edit function. I’m very tired………

    • Olaf says:

      What risk Mike?
The claim was: “A clear footprint cannot be made in vacuum because there is no moisture to hold its shape.”

This is scientifically the dumbest claim ever made!
Why would only moisture be needed to hold the shape?

So proving that also none-wet dust can hold the shape is enough to debunk the claim.

      • Serai says:

Isn’t it obvious? If you don’t have moisture, the wind will blow it away…on the moon…which has no atmosphere…

        oops.

        • Olaf says:

Of course I forgot the wind on the moon that has no atmosphere; lol

          • JK says:

You guys forgot to consider alien flatulence, which would easily blow those footprints away.
Because those aliens on the moon are invisible for humans, they were never seen.

Oh by the way, just kidding ;-)

  7. Mike says:

Why does this make you so angry? I’m not one of the denialist. I’m simply pointing out that a experiment needs to be performed in a neutral environment or you can count on the results being biased. You may be right about extremely educated scientists debunking these loons long before Mythbusters.

    • Olaf says:

Because it does not matter how neutral you make it. An denialist is so strongly stuck in his believe that no matter what you do he will call foul play. These people are just paranoid.

But for those that doubt the landings to be real, these people get the message that it is indeed very real.

In regard to denialsts. There are only about 10 people with many sock accounts that are very active in creating YouTube video’s.

  8. WarbVIII says:

Not sure which is more amusing, the video or arrakis’s friend and the treatment of said friend.

  9. Yoav says:

Buzz Aldrin had the right idea about dealing with these morons.

  10. Mike says:

My concern is that a biased experiment like the one we saw on Myth busters is giving the denialist exactly what they want. It opens the door for them to ask, “Why would Mythbusters go to NASA to challenge the validity of NASA?” Again this does not mean that I agree with the denialists!! Please do not refer to me as a moon hoaxer, my question is with Mythbusters, and not with the moon landing.

    • trj says:

It doesn’t matter one way or another. Denialists will always invent a reason to deny actual evidence. If NASA had provided actual moon dust for the Mythbusters experiment they’d no doubt be claiming anyway that it was fake. Because, you know, we never went to the Moon, so it’s obviously fake. That’s how they think.

There’s no way you can convince a denialist. Simply no way. But you can reach out to other people who have sensible standards to evidence and reason.

    • Olaf says:

It is the other people that are influenced by those hoaxers that benefits from this when the hoaxers gets exposed.

    • coffeejedi says:

Why do people like you never know how to use the freaking reply button correctly?
I’ve noticed that when smart people come on this site, they understand why each post has its own “reply” button and they get the concept of nested threads.

However stupid people like you* tend to not even NOTICE that the comments are nested, I wonder why that is. It’s a kind of intelligence test for this site.

*I normally don’t like to insult people on the internet, but you bashed Mythbusters (and on a skeptics’ site no less!), I’d say that’s conclusive evidence that you’re an awfully stupid person.

      • Mike says:

Why do you need to place people in a pecking order of intelligence? I worked with people who experience disabilities for a number of years and discovered that everyone has their own unique intelligence. There really is no litmus test for intelligence, not even IQ tests can determine that. It’s really misguided to try and make others looks stupid.

        • coffeejedi says:

Oh good lord, now comes the concern trolling!

I make a joke about you must not be intelligent due to your failings at using the internet ON THE INTERNET as you attempt to defend some ludicrous position, and now you play the sympathetic “I used work with people with disabilities so you calling me stupid insults them” card. Really? I mean really?! THAT’S your brilliant rebuttal.

When you call the Mythbusters, two genuinely intelligent, funny, skeptics who are at the forefront of bringing science education and skepticism to the forefront of American culture and to the next generation “a stupid joke”, all bets are off. I’ve met Adam Savage, he’s a hell of a guy, and 100% the same person you see on that show. Irreverent, charming, incredibly intelligent (far more than me), and filled with boundless enthusiasm and you dare call him and Jamie Hyneman a stupid joke?

I’m not calling on unseen and unknowable characters with disabilities off-stage in a pithy attempt to “shame” you like you did me. I’m referencing two very very real people who are doing fantastic work for our cause, and you sir have the AUDACITY to call them a stupid joke.

If you want to debate something, debate that. I guarantee though, you’ll lose.

          • Serai says:

Actually, coffeejedi, I think he’s right. Calling him stupid IS an insult to stupid people. (Ref: Wanda Gershwitz).

            ;)

  11. Mike says:

I guess it is a philosophical question whether the same stubbornness exists on both sides of a debate. Again, I am not defending the denailists. I don’t need a lecture on how ridiculous they are, I already know this!! I am simply stating that Mythbusters performed bad science. However, no one here will step up and acknowledge that because your methods are similar to that of the denialists. In other words, you simply dig for and find a retort, but for the wrong topic! At least the denialists, crazy as they are, stay on topic.

    • coffeejedi says:

I’m sorry, I’m confused, is that in reply to anyone in particular?

    • Ty says:

So you’re entire point is that a TV show where special effects artists test out myths is not science?

      *ding!*

You win the captain obvious award!

No one thinks Mythbusters is science. And actual scientists can debunk moon hoaxers six ways from Sunday. In fact, the best rebuttals of the hoaxers came from scientists interviewed on the show. The woman whose job it is to bounce lasers off of reflectors left by the astronauts was, to me, the ultimate nail in the hoaxer coffin.

But yes, a show run by non-scientists who don’t claim to be scientists does not use scientific rigor.

      So what?

    • Olaf says:

Oh trust me the myth busters way is completely different than denailist.
Denialists are anomaly hunters. For them 150 anomalies are proof that the moon-landing did not occur. The sad thing is that their so called anomalies are not anomalies at all but simple physics stuff like lens distortion of the camera and lens flares.

These denialists even have no clue how to create a movie or photographs, have no sense of how vacuum behaves and mistakes antenna reflection from wires.

    • trj says:

I have no problem at all conceding Mythbusters is often sloppy science. But it makes no friggin difference as far as denialists are concerned.

Are you worried they’ll use the non-rigorous Mythbusters experiments as ammunition to bolster their perpetual denial? I’m sure they will. No doubt if someone brings up that Mythbusters episode they’ll be whining that the Mythbusters didn’t perform rigorous experiments (ignoring the fact that had they actually done so the denialists would inevitably find some other excuse to dismiss the result).

Also, to these idiots the conspiracy is ever widening. Whenever somebody presents compelling evidence to counter denialist claims they’re obviously part of the conspiracy. The government is in on it. The media are in on it. The Russians are in on it. So why not the Mythbusters as well.

To them, everybody is either: 1) part of the conspiracy, 2) stupid deluded sheeple who believe the conspiracy, 3) smart, heroic individuals such as themselves who’ve seen through all the lies. It makes no difference what the hell you do. They will continue to follow this recipe indefinitely, no matter which arguments or evidence you present.

So Mythbusters did some bad science? Noone is surprised and noone cares. The show is entertainment first, science second.

  12. Daniel says:

This actually made me doubt the moon landing, when before, I had 100% believed it. The thing they brought up about the cold war…that makes sense, at least for motive.

I’ve never actually seen the rocket, except on television. How do I know it’s real? Yeah, I know GPSes and etc. supposedly. I’ve never seen a satellite, and I’ve never built a GPS. Again, how do I really know?

How do I know I’m not on a large scale joe schmoe show, with a bunch of other people like me, who are clueless?

I guess this is epic conspiracy

    • Daniel says:

When I said epic conspiracy, I meant like maybe I’m fucking insane…maybe not. I don’t know shit anymore. I’m so Goddamn confused about everything. I can’t trust fucking shit.

    • Serai says:

You know, you’re right. I’ve never actually seen Tom Cruise, except in movies. How do I know he’s real?

I’ve never actually seen Kilimanjaro, except in documentaries, How do I know it’s real?

I’ve never actually seen a penguin kangaroo enormous Iraqi desert crab/spider, except in soldiers’ photos. How do I know they’re real?

I’ve never actually seen Rome, except in, well, all of the above. How do I know IT’S real?

Need I go on? Didn’t think so. THAT is the level of your thinking right there, Sparky.
