“…Using a breakthrough nano technology…” – sounds (and looks) quite like the redneck oil cleaning solution posted here a couple of months (?) ago – they just used straw.
As for the oil spill, there was a UK newspaper article a week or so ago, saying that it has mostly been broken down by naturally occurring organisms. If I remember rightly, they said that any oil spill left alone will be broken down by nature much better than using man-made solutions (usually nasty chemicals), because the chemicals will be a real problem – no natural breakdown, so they stay and pollute.
Sounds cool, but they showed it in a lake. A lake is different from an ocean. What kind of protection against waves does it have? How will water affect the solar panel? Those are my biggest concerns.
It’s a high tech version of the Matter of Trust hair-filled booms. http://www.matteroftrust.org/programs/index.html
I’m still in favor of collecting the hair and old stockings for smaller oil spills, though. Even if that wonderful day comes when there are no more oil spill, hair, feathers, and other organic fibers are still wonderful soil additives.
Whatever happened to all that oil? It’s not big with the news anymore since they plugged the hole.

Where do those things store the oil?
Apparently in the fabric. I’m not sure of the capacity.

Remove the oil and put it where?
straight back into our cars!
Hmm, this reminds me of Futurama’s Season 6, Episode 9…
i suppose we need tons of oil to produce and power the robots..
