I read this on Pharyngula today and… Wow. I’m not even going to comment on it. I’m just going to let you read it:
“PRIMARY school students are being taught that man and dinosaurs walked the Earth together and that there is fossil evidence to prove it.
Fundamentalist Christians are hijacking Religious Instruction (RI) classes in Queensland despite education experts saying Creationism and attempts to convert children to Christianity have no place in state schools.
Students have been told Noah collected dinosaur eggs to bring on the Ark, and Adam and Eve were not eaten by dinosaurs because they were under a protective spell.”
Wow. Just…. Wow.
I though sorcery was not allowed for Real Christians(TM). Harry Potter books should not be read (better burned) and now Christians start with protective spells?
And I never heard of human (nowadays human) fossils next to dinosaurs. Where is their proof?
Just nowadays human fossils? The most primitive humans didn’t evolve until 4 million years ago, I that rules out any human skeleton from being found with dinos
But you forget to account for the magic flood™ and for imaginary sky daddy changing the speed of light and the rate of nuclear decay to confuse us into thinking the universe is 14 billion years old instead of the real number of 6000 years old.
You forgot the GodDidIt trump card. By defintion if GodDidIt then it is a good thing to do, weather it be magic protection spells, mana from heaven or genocide.
I was taught almost all of this when I was a kid (except the “DNA hadn’t been invented yet” bit). Our school even took us to Dinosaur Valley State Park that claimed to have dinosaur and human footprints together. That was all the proof we should need!
Sometimes the fact that I came out somewhat normal really amazes me.
The best part was where a child questioned the DNA and fossil evidence that directly disproves the religious claims and was told that ‘the flood skewed the evidence in the fossil record’ and that DNA wasn’t invented in the time of Adam and Eve.
It’s at this point that religion lessons in schools need to be supervised by an objective (ie sane) third party, to ensure our children aren’t permanently damaged by this kind of rubbish.
I spewed coffee all over my keyboard when I read the DNA haven’t been invented yet line. It just a perfect summery of the dept of creationist ignorance.
FUCK!!!! And no one noticed this up until now and has taken no action? Just wow.
Hey, can I have that spell? Might come in handy.
It takes a whole new level of stupidity to be cretinist in Australia. The unique fauna of the island, isolated for millions of years, is one of the most obvious evidences of evolution. How do they think koalas got there from wherever in the Middle East Noah parked the ark, according to the tale? They think they crawled all the way to Australia, crossing all Asia and the Timor Sea, all without leaving any trace of their passing?
Wow! pretty much nails it. But then again – Jurassic Park was actually filmed live! I especially loved the teachers argument on DNA on why (if we all descend from Adam and Eve) we’re not inbred: “DNA wasn’t invented then”. Genius argument!
Urgh,
Stuff like this makes me very upset.
I am and proudly so a Christian. (Well let me clarify, I follow the faith, I have issues with the religion.)
But damnit I really hate it when ‘Christians’ get up to nonsense like this.
It’s pathetic.
Interesting read from a “Wow -what-an-idiot” perspective.
Thanks for the post.
“My daughter rightly pointed out, as I had been teaching her about DNA and science, that ‘wouldn’t they all be inbred’?
“But the teacher replied that DNA wasn’t invented then.”
When people say stuff like that, it’s hard not to have the “Wow-what-an-idiot” perspective.
Good feeling to know it’s not only Texans who are idiots
Oh crap.
You may have just summoned the “LRA”.
From the source article:
“Set Free Christian Church’s Tim McKenzie said when students questioned him why dinosaur fossils carbon dated as earlier than man, he replied that the great flood must have skewed the data.
Queensland Teachers Union president Steve Ryan said teachers were sometimes compelled to supervise the instructors “because of all the fire and brimstone stuff”.”
You are all so cynical…Noah totally could have collected dinosaur eggs. They make great omelets, and they are a good source of protein, plus they are lower in cholesterol than ostrich eggs. WAKE UP haters.
DNA wasn’t invented yet? Okay, let’s all just ignore the science to justify our myth. Idiocy, pure idiocy. These people dishonor their God with this bovine excrement!
“New research shows three in 10 Australians believe dinosaurs and man did exist at the same time.” Oh shoot. The Aussies are getting as dumb as the Americans.
That’s more than America has in the way of believing Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii…
Protection spell? What, like a Protego? I thought HP was evil…?
Yes, I read this last week on our national news. I cannot believe the lengths that Christians will go to brainwash the minds of our young uns. What’s worse is this happening in my own state!!! Makes me SICK!!!
C’mon Australia, let’s keep it together….I did not emigrate FROM the USA only to see this happen in my new backyard.
From an Australian:
I apologise on behalf of all the normal, smart people in my nation. Everybody has a village idiot, apparently the world just found out about ours.
Unfortunately a good 50% of your population are village idiots.
But it’s actually around 90% because most of them count as two.
By that accounting, America probably has 110%.
Actually, around 20% of the Aussie population are atheists and the majority of the remaining 80% don’t even attend church.
Up until this point, I have counted myself lucky living in a country that generally respects separation of church and state, and isn’t infested with mindless godbots like in the US. But hearing about this happening in my own state has inspired me to seek out a local atheist/secular activism group. It seems we’ve become complacent .. where’s the outrage to this story? It’s open for comments, and yet there are none.
This cannot be ignored.
Have they been watching too much of “The Flintstones”? There goes my jesus-freak uncle’s belief that oil came raining down from outer space! Can they think up any more weird and wacky ideas? Damn….I wish that rapture would happen soon!!
