Quick Comment on Comments

So Daniel promotes me to the exalted position of “Managing Editor.” A few days later, UF tops 4 million page views. Can it really be a coincidence?

Yes, actually, it can.

Regardless, I’m my new position I’m trying to make a point of checking the moderation and spam directories more frequently. We’ve had a number of people wind up in the moderation list for reasons that are beyond me. If this happens to you, be patient, and I will clear your comment within a few hours.

I should also say that we’re getting hammered by trackbacks and comments from spam blogs. The spam filter catches the majority, but a few slip through. If you see a comment from such, just ignore it for now. I’ll usually delete any replies to the spam comment rather than leave them hanging with no explanation.

If you want help monitoring the spam filter and Daniel doesn’t mind, just let me know. I can read it at the moment anyway (and occasionaly do), but can’t approve / delete comments from it.

Excellent. Please clear my proposal of a lucrative situation involving Nigerian state funds in an offshore bank quickly. This is a time-sensitive situation. Thank you.

Sounds legit. Do you accept third-party out of state checks? If you deposit a small amount of funds into my account, we can make sure the bank systems recognize eachother. I am a doctor of doctorology, so you know you can trust me.

And I’ve got the same surname as you, Mr . Looks like we could be in business for that inheritance.

If you all send me your account numbers and a letter of attorney I will make sure to deposit a substantial sum of money in your accounts, since I’ve recently decided to give away money to random people on the internet.

I don’t want to miss out on this opportunity. Please respond with your e-mail so I can forward my bank account info and social security number. I don’t want you to think I am not serious in my inquiry. ;-)

Just make sure you disable your Anti-virus and firewalls. The company was having a lot of false positives with windows users.

“Just make sure you disable your Anti-virus and firewalls”

          What are those? :-)

            oh lawdy lol.

This really all reminds me of the time my wife and I were chatting:

(Japanther) Don’t install that, baby. Just right click on it and ‘scan for virus’
(Wife) Do I open it in Windows Exploder?
(Japanther)… Please tell me you didn’t install something called ‘Windows Exploder’…

Couldn’t have happened to a nicer historian.

I’ve gotten a few “Your comment is awaiting moderation” notices on posts where I honestly could not see anything that would have set off the filter.

Actually I’m pretty sure one of them was flagged because I used the name of she who must not be named (e********d*****) which I’m guessing was added to the list of naughty words here after she was banned.

  5. MahouSniper says:

While you’re checking for spam, you might want to consider spell-checking your post. Or are you really your new position?

  6. kjpweb says:

I would ditch trackbacks entirely since they are almost exclusively used by spammers anyway.
There’s a WP plugin available, that disables them.
