Tomorrow is “Powers of Ten Day,” or “10-10-10″. It’s the day to celebrate the change in perspective that comes from viewing the world in different orders of magnitude. You can check out the map on the Powers of Ten Website to see if there’s an event near you.
The video that started the whole things is a bit dated – it has that school filmstrip feel to it – but it’s still worth watching.

Reminds me of this interesting flash I saw on Newgrounds:

Worth a look.
i just merely wonder what 11-11-11 is gonna be called? possibly elevenses eleven? as a ode to lord of the rings or maybe some other obscure reference to something people may of heard about but never think bout.and then there’s gonna be 12-12-12 and i have no clue what that’ll be called :D
11-11-11 can be scientology day since the evil aliens in L.Ron’s Battlefield Earth use a base 11 numerical system.
There would probably be some advantage to using a primary base number system, but I’m not sure what it would be.
*prime base
Base 3 supposedly has some interesting properties. I’ve seen it argued that it has the highest information density. http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/id.3268,y.0,no.,content.true,page.2,css.print/issue.aspx
However seeing as its used in Muslim prayer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base_3#Practical_usage I’m sure some will consider it satanic 220200.
That’s interesting; I hadn’t heard that.
I was thinking more along the lines of p-adic numbers, which are only useful for prime bases.
As is noted in comments below, 101010 in binary is 42. Or 6 x 9. Which actually works in base 13.
Not only that, it is my middle son’s birthday. His goal for the year is to build a working time machine so next year he can come back in time to 10-10-10 on his tenth birthday.
*Like*
101010 in binary is 42. SPOOKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don’t … the old ones are the best ones!
You all know that 101010 in binary is 42, right? Just sayin….
