    Not to mention Chemistry.

Alcohol, alkali, amalgam, boron, antimony, sugar, and tartrate are all Arabic loanwords to English, owing to the fact that the Medieval Arabs basically invented the discipline (by taking several significant steps out from alchemy-also a loanword-towards scientific chemistry).

    • Darwin says:

      You forgot algorithm.

      • Elemenope says:

Algorithm is not a chemistry term. If one were to expand the list to include *all* English words of Arabic origin, it becomes…well, very long, especially considering the two languages are not directly related.

        • Darwin says:

I missed out on the chemistry part, which is why I posted algorithm. The reason I find it cool is that it’s derived an actual mathematician’s name(al-Khwārizmī).

      Wow wait a minute.
As far as I have read, Muslims did not invent numerals, they only brought it with them to Europe. Numerals are coming from India long before the Islam.

Also many inventions happened during the period where many other religions including atheists were welcome in Islamic culture. Inventions suddelny stopped when Islam became unfriendly to the other religions and atheists that brought these to Islam culture.

Tell me what has Islam invented the last 500 years?

  2. Custador says:

Perhaps if fundies found out that Muslims also invented hand-grenades, they’d kill a few less brown people…

  3. Harrison Gross says:

Now class, what is MCMXCIX + MCMLVIII? That’s right, MMMCMLVII!

What do you mean we’re in grade 6 and still don’t know basic addition? Also, what the hell is a zero?

  4. L.Long says:

When you consider how abysmally ignorant so many americans are, the math teacher has a reason to be concerned. And when you consider that they want to go back to the good old days of christianity, you know they are even more ignorant than you thought because then you have to give up all modern medicine cuz it was a pagan development from pagan rome, greek, & muslim culture and rediscovered after the enlightenment. All ‘out of sight of land’ navigation is basically pagan chinese & muslim. And all xtian developments in any of the sciences was done by people who went against the holey teachings of ‘g0d did it’ or ‘the devil did it’ used natural science.
So it is no surprise that almost all science, medicine, and math are a pagan evil to the xtians. After all the buyBull says the world is flat and greek math shows it to be a ball, obviously math is a thing of Satan.

  5. Lance says:

The Bible does say that the value of Pi is 3, which the literal, inerrant, “god’s word” types I could easily see taking issue with in math education.

Whoopsie! And star names: Altair, Al Giedi, Aldebaran, Alcor, Alchiba (“tent” – uh-oh, as in the Sheik of Araby!), Al Athfar…. Whoa! That’s one step away from Al Qaida!

    We’re on a roll!

  7. Yeah, I’m a math teacher in Texas and this hits home for sure . . .
