    Ha! No kidding.

“We assassinate abortion doctors and commit arson because we’re pro-life. You know, for Jesus.”

And one more question….. Why are all of these same people the biggest supporters of all our (The United State’s) useless wars?

    • dutchhobbit says:

Because its not murder if you do it in the name of Jesus.

I’ve had people tell me with a straight face that the commandment is specifically “Thou shalt not murder“, and that any form of government-sanctioned killing is AOK with Jesus. War, the death penalty, self-defense… so long is it’s not murder (as defined by your local power structure), it’s all good. Of course, these same people tend to make an exception for abortion, which is “murder”, even though it isn’t. And they have (sometimes) accepted that other things can be “murder” even if the government disagrees – the Nazis killing the Jews*, for example, was “murder” even though it wasn’t, for example.

*But the Nazis killing homosexuals? most people I’ve had this conversation with agree that that wasn’t “murder”.

To be fair, the commandment is “don’t murder,” at least in the Torah. Well, it doesn’t have exactly the same meaning as “murder,” but it is more than just “killing.”

The Torah specifically outlines specific situations in which killing is not murder, including as capital punishment, to defend against an intruder, and in warfare.

This was basically a primitive law code, keep in mind, not just some random assertions like it sometimes seems today. It’s just not a very good one.

I’m not claiming that “Don’t murder” is a less accurate translation than “Don’t kill”; just that it’s a less useful one as it requires that you already have a working understanding of the difference between justified killing and murder – a difference that varies from culture to culture. In essence it boils down to “Don’t do things that are forbidden”, which isn’t the most useful commandment.

I’ve often wondered why you never see protesters at fertility clinics. Lots of, maybe most, embryos fertilized in such clinics do not not result in babies. Just as you don’t see right-to-lifers queing up to support women who can’t afford to keep their babies, you don’t see them trying to be implanted with the excess embryos, either.

    • Mike says:

You seem to be under the somewhat misguided impression that the ‘pro-lifers’ are in any way rational in their stance…

I love Jesus and Mo. Sadly, it is blocked at work.
