Jesus Hates Obama

From HuffPo

Fox has rejected a proposed Super Bowl ad from a conservative comedy site called JesusHatesObama.com.

[...]

A representative for the site said that it was founded by a man named Richard Belfry. On the site, people can order anti-Obama merchandise, such as t-shirts and hats. A block of text on the front page of the site explains, “do we really believe that Jesus hates Obama? Of course not! However, we do believe in freedom…as in the freedom to make fun of the Obama administration with novelty t-shirts…our products may be a joke but so are the policies of this administration.”

No offense, conservatives, but I’m not sure all of you quite get the concept of irony. Maybe it’s just my sense of humor.

Still, I kinda wish the ad would run. Although I am surprised that a small novelty operation can afford the ad time during the Super Bowl.

I’m still wondering what happened to all the conservatives who said it was un-American to publicly criticize a sitting president in wartime.

    • Elemenope says:

      They lost.

      • Darwin says:

        Badly, too.

        • UrsaMinor says:

Ah, but my prediction is that criticizing a wartime president will only remain acceptable to conservatives until the next Republican takes the office.

          • Elemenope says:

Of course. Because, then, they won.

Democrats do it too (in fact, I’m pretty sure that everyone does it to a greater or lesser extent), give one’s own side a pass on things that you would excoriate the other for doing. It is hard to do it in as bald and un-self-aware a fashion as modern American conservatives seem to, though.

It has somewhat to do with hypocrisy, but it also has to do with the asymmetry of power; when you’re in charge, you are the focus of criticism, and when you’re not in charge, you’re relegated to the role of the critic. It’s hard to vociferously criticize someone who isn’t in a position to actually *do* anything, whereas taking shots at the head guy is practically de rigueur. I wasn’t just being snarky about the whole “they lost” thing; it is a crucial element.

            • UrsaMinor says:

I think I have been entirely too subtle in my attempt to point out the hypocrisy.

But you are right, the conservatives have no monopoly on the practice. I just think that they are, as you say, more “bald and un-self-aware” when they do it.

            • Len says:

Do they have to be bald?

“Although I am surprised that a small novelty operation can afford the ad time during the Super Bowl.”

That is the point, they absolutely can’t afford to run a Superbowl ad but they defiantly can afford to have one rejected and reap the benefit of the publicity that it provides.

  3. andyinsdca says:

They probably can’t, but they proposed the ad, got shot down and now the blogosphere is going bananas saying “ZOMG!!11!1eleven!! FOX rejected the ad” and poof, now they get tons of free advertising.

There is no such thing as “controversy” any more…just free advertising.

  4. LiberalScoop says:

I think this company has a long way to go before they can afford airtime during Superbowl. The interesting part of this is that nobody actually knows why Fox turned them down. I think it’s because they simply couldn’t pony up the cash for the spot. JHO knew the publicity would bring people to their website and make them some bank.

I favor the “Jesus was a Socialist merch,” myself.

  6. Verimius says:

Richard Belfry. As in “bats in the…”

  7. WarbVIII says:

hmm, all I can say is for an add it wasn’t bad…past that good strategy by the business. Otherwise so what overall, I don’t like it but that has as much to do with the fact I voted for Obama as anything else.

  8. 6uldvnt says:

That cannot be a real Jesus bobble head…it doesn’t have blue eyes!

  9. Tee says:

The article I read said the money came from a “private investor” so someone fronted him the money. We can all speculate which rich Republican did.

Oh and the ad is stupid and not funny.

  10. Michael says:

Why do Fundies hate so much? They claim to believe in Jesus(who requested that everybody love one another), yet there is so much talk of hatred. Might they all be hypocrites?

    • Kodie says:

I would love to hear from Christians who, even if they personally hate Obama, are embarrassed at a company that portrays their savior like this and wouldn’t spend a nickel in that store.

  11. Dan M says:

If that were a satirical skit about the intolerance of evangelical Christians, that would be mildly funny. I just don’t get how the Obama bobble-head falls in the fish bowl. Does Jesus use ‘the force’? Oh, the force is not a Christian belief. I’m confused. It needs a little more work. Maybe that’s Fox rejected it.

  12. The Lyniezian says:

This I do not consider Christian in any sense. You do not go round making jokes to the effect that Jesus hates anyone in order to score points against your political opponents- it is not only poor taste, but blasphemy. I don’t imagine the person who made this was that genuine in their faith, if they were even Christians.

    • Yoav says:

      I hear bagpipes.

      • Kodie says:

I do too, but I’d seriously like to ask the makers of the items they are trying to sell with this ad how they square this portrayal of Jesus with a monopoly on morality, and if they think god would think it was amusing. Of all the cognitive dissonances Christians can have, I would like to listen to their explanation for this ad and the products they sell.

      • Jabster says:

        “I hear bagpipes.”

… and see a man wearing a skirt, whatever can this mean?

  13. W Weston Boyd says:

Jesus LOVES Barrack Obama. “We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for *.
God IS LOVE, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.” [1 John 4:16]
To the writers/directors: Based on this ad, you do not know Jesus or His words. I pray that you do. He LOVES you too……enough die for you. Stop and ask for him, and I promise he will show up.

    • kholdom0790 says:

Quoting scripture on an atheist’s blog… not such a good way to convince us. Besides, don’t you know Baal or his words? I pray that you do. hE loVES you enOUgh TO DiE FoR you! Oh, what’s that? Randomly capitalising things doesn’t mean shit? My bad!

    • Kodie says:

“I promise he will show up.”

      Will he clean my apartment?
