Fox Fooled by Pakistani Paper

Reader Brian M left a link in the forum to a new English language online newspaper out of Pakistan called Roznama Jawani.

Roznama Jawani is pretty clearly a parody paper along the lines of The Onion. At the moment, the articles include things like “Lady Gaga Inspired By Moammar Gaddafi’s Fashion Sense – Fights Rebels,” and “Man from Peshawar Sues Red Bull. Says He Has No Wings!”

A twitter feeds runs lines like “JUST IN: Ex Wife Pissed at Local Resident for Treating Her Equally. Sues for Emotional Damage”.

The site carries the following legal notice:

The stories published in Roznama Jawani might only be applicable and true in another universe. That universe might be parallel to this universe. Might even be serial. Who knows?! Maybe some one does.

Somehow, Fox News missed all this. According to Salon, Fox carried a story from the satrical article “Padded Bras are Devil’s Cushions” says Council of Islamic Ideology,” and treated it as fact.

Fox pulled the article, but not before looking foolish.

Now Vorjack! You’re not implying that Faux News aren’t fair and unbiassed and don’t vet their sources properly, are you?

  2. FO says:

    Wouldn’t be a first.

This awesome article http://www.theonion.com/articles/98-homosexualrecruitment-drive-nearing-goal,536/ was cited as true by an anti-gay fundie during his electoral campaign.
When I send Onion articles around, most of my friends fall for it.

In other news: Italy is not exposing itself, but at least NATO is forcing us to provide the bases.
Fuck, for once I’m so happy of being in NATO!

Yes, the hard hitting unbiased and fact checking people at fox surely wouldn’t have done this because they thought this was real. They must have done it in jest and forgot to say it was. (JK)

I find it hard to tell the difference between Fox and The Onion.

  5. AVlCENNA says:

Oh even better. That site now carries a slogan calling itself “The No. 1 source for Fox News”. These guys are badass.

  6. Cang says:

I think Fox can be forgiven for this. Religious fundamentalism is crazy enough that parody is damn near indistinguishable.

    • Yoav says:

That’s why a news organization is expected to do a minimal vetting of their sources. a 5 minutes look at the rest of the site should have made it clear to any editor who is even remotely competent that this is a joke site.

    • Michael says:

There is a reason journalists get paid to do research. They aren’t supposed to just go on Google for two minutes and jot down notes on the first interesting article they see.

  7. L.Long says:

How easy is it to fall for an Onion article when the major players all believe that some dud was born from a virgin and walks on water??? The Onion story sounds down right sensible!!
