I posted links a while back to a Louis Theroux documentary, The Most Hated Family in America, in which Louis tried to get inside the mind of the Phelps family of Westboro Baptist Church fame.
Well, Louis has been back! He’s written an article about it prior to the airing of his new documentary, America’s Most hated Family In Crisis, on Sunday 3rd of April 2011, and he’s also posted a couple of interesting clips, which I thought I would share:
Tune in to BBC 2 at 21:00 on Sunday 3rd April 2011 if you can!
* And everybody else once some kind person inevitably rips it from the iplayer to youtube.
Update: I’m aware that this content isn’t available in the US, but I’ve been unable to rip it from the BBC site – I was planning to rehost it on YouTube, but now can’t, obviously. I’ll do my best to find a workaround and get back to y’all ASAP.
Update 2: I’ve now replaced the BBC videos with YouTube ones. Enjoy!

Don’t you hate 404′s ? grin
Fixed, thanks Balstrome :-)
‘xcuse my ignorance, what’s a 404?
Does anyone know, would an anonymizer prevent the BBC server from recognizing a US IP address?
A 404 is the code given to an error where the page requested is not found. So if you type http://www.somesite.com/something.html and that page something.html does not exist, then you get an error called a 404 error.
Anonymising your address is not exactly what you want to be doing here – rather than trying to fool the BBC into thinking you are not from the US, you want to fool it into thinking you ARE from the UK, since only UK IP addresses are accepted. Therefore, you want a British proxy. A google search for “british proxy” or “proxy to watch BBC Iplayer” should do the job.
Actually, the anonymizer DID work!
To get BBC to allow the video on my computer, I used Firefox with the TOR browser.
My guess is that the BBC set it up differently than you described it, rather than only accept UK ip addresses, they blocked selected country ip addresses, such as the US. I can’t imagine that TOR is smart enough to mimick the country’s ip address that you want to pretend to be.
TOR frequently changes what pipes you are going through, so it could be that you got lucky and ended up with a UK address on this particular occasion. It is also possible the BBC works differently, as you describe, but that would be a bit inefficient of them to blacklist almost every individual country on Earth when they can just whitelist the UK and a couple of others.
I just get the message “Not available in your area”…
Me too.
See above comment. I watched them in the US using Firefox and the TOR plug-in.
(But then you have to click on the 2nd link at the beginning of the article, which is:

As much as I hate them, they are an interesting study. Would be great to be able to see this in the states, hopefully the BBC will put it on dvd and netflix will put it on instant.
I wish BBC would allow other countries to pay the “TV tax” for access to their iPlayer.
It would be worth it just for “Doctor Who Confidential”. BBC America plays snippets of it during the show, but not the whole thing.
Torrent.
I’ve downloaded all last year’s Dr. Who episodes.
USA politicians, *try* to convince me there isn’t censorship and lack of access/freedom in the USA.
there is freeware available (one, iirc, is ipHide) that will change/mask your ip so a website thinks you are from a different ip address and/or country. If you choose a UK ip address, BBC thinks you are permitted to stream their content.
Japan won’t let me see it either…
Hey! How are you? Are things better for you lately? I’ve been thinking about you and hoping you are ok.
*web-hugs*
While they claim that they hate homosexuals simply because they are capable of reading the bible, they clearly cannot be reading all that well, otherwise they would have no problem with abortion as it is encouraged in certain circumstances. I noted a few outfits woven from more than one type of cloth as well…
Not that there is any real point in using rationality when dealing with these people. They are professional trolls, nothing more, and the only reason I would even bother to get angry with them is that their loathsome beliefs are shared by people who have better reputations but a lot more capacity to do enormous damage – politicians and a good number of voters.
Yesterday only one of them said “Not available in your area”. (Little place called the U.S.) Now both of them say that. Progress! But not the kind of progress I wanted.
That was quite an interesting documentary. I liked the Lady Gaga inspired soundtrack. It’s such a shame seeing the children brainwashed in that way, but there seems to be a bit of a gulf between the adults and the younger members of the congregation. I’m curious why they allowed Louis to return, because the older members seem to be entirely aware that he is trying to trap them in contradictions and make them evaluate the inconsistencies in their own positions. Yet they still let him be there, wandering around and interacting with everyone, even if they do try to shut down discussion that takes a turn they don’t like.
I’m loading the YouTube video now. The screen says “GUIDANCE: SOME STRONG LANGUAGE”. Watch out, xians!
