This whole situation just pisses me off. I really can’t believe the evangelicals on this one. Of all the places to marginalize minorities, they get all up on the army? Gaaaahhh.
If freedom of religion doesn’t include freedom from religion, then it is simply: “You have a choice. You are free to choose the way we tell you is right.”
I’ve never considered myself a “spiritual” person, be it religious or general spirituality. I always hated when people tried to make the argument that you don’t have to be religious if you are at least spiritual, as if that is equal to going to your own personal church and is therefore better than just not going to church at all. I like the message in this video that is it OK to feel that way.
Well, as the video mentions, it’s no longer happening. The Fort, after originally allowing them adequate facilities and support, has drastically reduced them to the point that the event is no longer possible. Currently (I believe), they are bringing the issue to the courts.
They had all the permits and set a date for April 2nd when about 2 weeks before the event they got a letter that in contrast to what was promised they will not be receiving any support from the military (the evangelicals got over 50K), they have to add a disclaimer that the army has nothing to do with the event (the army openly endorsed the evangelical event) and that instead of the open area they will have to use an auditorium with only a few hundred seats. There was also a claim that it was all because the speakers have not gave an official letter of intent indicating they plan to be part of the event, something that was never mentioned before and was not required from the evangelicals. This basically killed the event.
I know the man behind rock beyond belief posted here in the past, so Justin if you’re lurking somewhere let us know if there are updates.
It would be cool if they could get some major backing and hold the event somewhere outside of Fort Bragg. They could call it F#!K the FORT. I don’t do the social networking thing, so I’m not sure what I can do to help. Religion is one of the things I hated about being in the Military.

Did this already happen, or is it happening? I would absolutely love a chance to hear Dawkins speak, and it’s within driving distance…
