Jesus, As Seen on TV

The historian Robert Conquest once quipped that “every organization appears to be headed by secret agents of its opponents.” That’s the feeling I get from posts like James McGrath’s Ways to Undermine Christianity, where he points out that a number of modern Evangelical ideas cause more harm than good.

That’s also the feeling I get from the constant barrage of Jesus Junk, to which we can now add the Jesus Snuggie:

(via Jesus Needs New Pr)

Some of the Liberal Christians like to say that Christianity began when a small group of Jews could no longer think of God without also thinking about Jesus. What happens when American Christians can no longer think about Jesus without thinking about a line of cheap commercial knock-offs?

EDIT: Apparently, I need to shut up. Witness the atheist snuggie:

From Friendly Atheist. What are the odds of mutual snuggie related posts on Patheos?

I don’t think it can possibly get sillier than this:

I used to work in a christian bookstore. When “The Prayer of Jabez” came out, there came along with it all the usual money making spin-offs: journals, decorative stones, bookmarks, devotion books, etc. It really was enough to make you sick. One day a pastor came through my line and said, “What’s next? ‘Prayer of Jabez’ toilet paper? ‘Oh, that it might not cause me pain!’”

Afterthought: I guess the mints come in handy when you throw up a little in your mouth…

    Free bookmark! I’m sold!

Just say no to the bookmark. It’s the first step on the slippery slope that leads unsuspecting heathens to salvation.

    Snuggly! And such bargain price!
    I want it.

If the worst part of American Christianity were the cheap cheesy crap in catalogs, I wouldn’t have any problems with American Christianity.

Apparently, during the down time everybody’s account was downgraded to “inactive.” We can probably fix that, and hopefully soon, though I’m in no position to make promises. If you can’t wait, you can create a new account.

I think you’re probably safe, Vorjack. The atheist snuggie is apparently only for one legged atheists.

  8. L.Long says:

We all know that atheists believe in nothing (know this because it is state by high xtian officials so must be true). So with an atheist symbol there must be nothing there and what we are seeing is a naked atheist who thinks there is a snuggly.

  9. Robster says:

Now the godbots will claim the godless are trying to highjack snuggies to promote godless-ness over the festive season. It’s part of the plan to kill christmas and make it no more than 5 days off. Yippee!

  10. RickRay1 says:

If only the Christians knew that their religion is known in modern circles as the”Copycat Religion”. Stolen ideas from Gnostic Christians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Hindus etc. before Christianity & Jesus ever came along. Oh, the fun of plagiarizing and then getting caught!
