Markuze Falls Off the Wagon

From the Montreal Gazette:

A Saint-Laurent man has been charged, again, with abusing social media to threaten people who express their views online.

Dennis Markuze, 40, faces three new charges, including one alleging he violated the conditions of a sentence he received in May for the same offence. He was also charged with threatening the Montreal police officer who was investigating claims from several of Markuze’s past victims. Those victims alleged that Markuze’s threats have intensified in recent months.

In May, Markuze received an 18-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to uttering threats toward eight people he believed to be atheists. The court was told Markuze’s problems could be attributed to drug consumption, which caused him to believe he was “the Voice of God.” As part of his sentence, he was ordered to “abstain from participating in a social network, blog and discussion forum.” But during the summer, several people contacted The Gazette to report that Markuze appeared to be ignoring the court order.

We’ve seen Markuze around these parts recently, so it’s good to see that the authorities were keeping an eye on him.

That’s interesting. I did notify Montreal police when he was commenting here; they never got back to me, but I can’t help wondering if I contributed in some small way to getting his worthless ass off my internetz :-p

How serious do threats need to be before they become illegal?

I’m not exactly shocked that he ignored the court order. The Montreal police were never keen on getting involved in the first place and practically had to be dragged into it, and the punishment he received was essentially a verbal reprimand as far as I can tell. Given his sketchy mental state and the hands-off approach of Montreal law enforcement that Markuze experienced on the first go-round, it is truly a wonder that he didn’t start harassing folks again on the internet as soon as he left the courtroom. Delusion + indifferent law enforcement = freedom to threaten.

Can they see to it that he gets some real mental health treatment this time? Please?

There’s a very long and interesting story about how it went so long before Markuze was arrested, do check it out. IMHO I think it is the courts that have let him down, not the police.
