Non-stop Evangelism

You gotta give Trisha Ramos credit. She one bad tract-distributing lady. If there were an ancient ninja clan dedicated to distributing evangelical tracts, Trisha would be their secret leader lurking in the back of the cave. She friends with Ray Comfort (surprise!) and she runs a blog called Fish with Trish where she displays some of her more interesting techniques, such as using your dog to carry spare tracts.

Here’s one that PersonalFailure posted in which Trisha is at a Taco Bell/KFC drive-through. In addition to being incredibly rude – hey, would it kill you to put down the cell phone while carrying on a transaction – Trisha passes off tracts to her server and the car behind her. PF vents her spleen over at Forever in Hell. (at least I think it’s a spleen. I was never good at anatomy.)

Supposedly, St. Francis once said, “Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.” If you listen to the video carefully, you can here him weeping in the background.

Comfort's New Bible

Here’s an ad for the new “Evidence Bible,”

Honestly, at first I was frightened that this was going to be a new translation. Sort of like The Living Bible, which tries to defuse a lot of the biblical controversies by changing the text itself.

Instead, it just looks like a version of the KJV with heaps of annotations that supply all the thought-stopping answers necessary to maintain your plausibility structure. I doubt there’s anything really new in there, since that’s not Comfort’s style. But it will be slickly produced, streamlined and convincing to those people who are already convinced. For years to come we’ll probably be seeing a lot of its arguments in the comments.

Who is Ray Preaching To?

Via Jesus Needs New PR, here’s a well produced animated clip from Living Waters (Ray Comfort’s group).

To my (former Episcopalian) eyes, it looks like Protestant theology, streamlined and blown up to the point of caricature. No one is good enough to deserve Heaven, and so only thorough God’s grace are we truly saved from death. To receive that grace, we must believe that Jesus was the son of God who died for our sins.

One thing confuses me: who’s the intended audience here? If you believe in the Christian heaven, you’re likely to believe in the Trinity and salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus. If you believe in a type of heaven, but are Jewish or Muslim, then you’re hardly going to be impressed by some theological assertions derived from another person’s holy book. If you’re a non-believer, you likely don’t believe in heaven, hell, a theological type of sin or any of the rest of the package.

So who are Ray and Kirk talking to?

Ray Comfort's Leather Vest

I learned something new about Ray Comfort today — it seems he is actually skilled in something. He does leatherwork and gave a handmade leather vest to a woman who is selling it on eBay and giving 75% of the proceeds to the Foundation Beyond Belief. It’s also signed by Ray Comfort, and who wouldn’t want something signed by a madman?

From the eBay description:

For your bidding pleasure. . . a brand-spankin’-new, genuine cowhide vest, handmade and signed by, that paragon of Christian thought, Ray Comfort at Living Waters Ministries.

This vest would fit women sizes 6/8. (I’m guessing here. This is what I wear and it fits me.) It has a super-soft outside, two pockets and four shiny, new snaps. It smells great, actually (if you like cow-hide, and I do), and though it’s a bit crispy, would soften up with some wear. Plus, did I mention, Ray Comfort signed it?! (on the inside)…

If you’re not familiar with it, I encourage you to visit the site, and consider how Mr. Comfort would squirm knowing that money made from his vest went to the National Center for Science Education or to support the rights of the LGBT community!

And just how fine is this garment, you ask? Another auction is offering a Ray Comfort-made vest right now, and it’s currently going for 1,007.00—all of this to support Living Waters Ministry (omfsm!) Can we wretched non-believers raise a similar amount for works that will make an actual positive difference in the world?

You know, now that I think about it, Ray is not known for being the most honest person in the world. We know he’s an unrepentant plagiarist, for instance. Did he really handmake this vest? Or did he have someone do it and then just claim he did it? Hmm…
