‘Cause if women can vote, how can the men make all the rules?
A small group of ultra-Orthodox Jews has prevented some women from voting in local elections in Jerusalem. It’s the latest step by the extremely pious Jews to try to force their practices on others.
Israel’s Channel 2 TV video showed the men screaming at a few dozen women, demanding that they leave a voting station Wednesday. Then the men pushed them away.
The incident happened soon after Jerusalem’s secular mayor, Nir Barkat, left the station after speaking out against gender discrimination.
Recently Israel’s ultra-Orthodox minority have become more active in trying to impose gender segregation beyond their communities. Women have been forced to the back of some buses that serve their neighborhoods.
The vast majority of Israel’s Jews object to such measures.

Sad:
Rabbi Yaakov Deutsch, a prominent rabbi from the city of Afula in northern Israel, was indicted on Sunday for committing sexual offenses against four minors, two boys and two girls.
According to the indictment, which was served by the northern district attorney’s office at Nazareth District Court, Deutsch, who has lived in Afula for forty years and has become an important local figure with a large following, abused his position to carry out a number of sexual offenses against minors.
The charges include unlawful sexual intercourse with consent, sodomy, and indecent assault of a fifteen year-old girl, indecent assault of a thirteen year-old girl, indecent assault of a thirteen year-old boy, and indecent assault of a fourteen year-old boy.
Richard Bartholomew has been following reports of poor quality counter-terrorism training at the FBI. The chief name is William Gawthrop, who led one of the worst examples. Some of Gawthrop’s wisdom:
At the Bureau’s training ground in Quantico, Virginia, agents are shown a chart contending that the more “devout” a Muslim, the more likely he is to be “violent.” Those destructive tendencies cannot be reversed, an FBI instructional presentation adds: “Any war against non-believers is justified” under Muslim law; a “moderating process cannot happen if the Koran continues to be regarded as the unalterable word of Allah.”
…What’s more, the Islamic “insurgency” is all-encompassing and insidious. In addition to outright combat, its “techniques” include “immigration” and “law suits.” So if a Muslim wishes to become an American or sues the FBI for harassment, it’s all just part of the jihad.
Andrew Gelman found this graph from the training:
Gelman points out probably the most ridiculous part:
I assume the line labeled “Bible” is referring to Christians? I’m sort of amazed to see pious and devout Christians listed as being maximally violent at the beginning. Huh? I thought Christ was supposed to be a nonviolent, mellow dude. The line starts at 3 B.C., implying that baby Jesus was at the extreme of violence.
They say this baby Jesus is one bad motherf- SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
It’s all too much for Fred Clark:
Just for fun, think about the violence and constant warring within Christianity six centuries ago. This was a time when Christian nations and competing Christian popes were waging total war against one another. The closest thing to a peace plan anyone in Christendom had at the time was to organize crusades against the infidels just to give the devout and pious Christian knights something to do besides plunder and pillage their own kingdoms. The most violent extremist fringe of any religion in the contemporary world can’t even begin to rival the warlike brutality that defined Christianity 600 years ago, and for centuries before and after that time. Yet that half-millennium of constant, brutal war and atrocity is shown on the ridiculous graph above as a linear progression toward nonviolence.
