Ed Young’s Sexperiment

You might have already heard about this, but if not, it’s worth a laugh. Ed Young, a mega-church pastor, is staging a publicity stunt where he and his wife stay in bed for 24 hours on the roof of his church.

Talk about a bunch of weirdos:

To encourage members of his congregation and others to take part in what he calls a “sexperiment,” Dallas pastor Ed Young and his wife Lisa began staging a “bed-in” on Friday morning, laying in a bed on the roof of their Texas church for 24 hours.

They say they want to illustrate that sex begins in heaven.

“It’s time to put the bed back in church and God back in the bed because God is the one that thought sex up,” says Ed Young, senior pastor of Fellowship Church.

While in bed, the Youngs plan to have bedside interviews via skype with various pastors and friends to “discuss tantalizing truths about sex as God intended,” according to their website.

“God said that we are to make love within the beauty and the covenant of marriage,” says the pastor.

Right. Well, whatever floats their boats.

That Exact Nonsense

Penn Jillette, in his book, God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist:

There is no god and that’s the simple truth. If every trace of any single religion died out and nothing were passed on, it would never be created exactly that way again. There might be some other nonsense in its place, but not that exact nonsense. If all of science were wiped out, it would still be true and someone would find a way to figure it all out again.

Bet Shemesh Flashmob

You’ve probably heard by now about the tensions in Israel between ultra-conservative Jews and … pretty much everyone else. There was an incident in December where one of the ultra-conservatives expressed his ire at a girl who was dressed (by his standards) immodestly. From Ami Kaufman’s blog at 972:

Naama Margolis, an 8-year-old from Bet Shemesh, is the most famous girl in Israel today. In fact, nobody can stop talking about her.

And why is that? Well, on Friday evening, Naama told her story on the most watched news show in the country. Interviewed by Channel 2’s Shai Gal, Naama told how she was afraid to go to school, just a few hundred meters from her house in Bet Shemesh, because Haredim cursed and spit on her for being dressed “immodestly.”

In response to this and other incidents, women in the Bet Shemesh neighborhood staged a flash mob: a dance for women’s equality and pluralism.

On Friday, Jan 6th, 2012, a group of 250 women from Bet Shemesh decided to raise their voices against the exclusion of women from the public domain by holding a mass public dance in the city square. The women, residents of the city from all ages and sectors, religious, traditional and secular, gathered together in a flashmob dance, in the city square and started dancing towards a change.

Information Wants to Be Free, Amen.

I’m not sure what to make of this. Via the LA Times:

Copying and file sharing recognized as a religion in Sweden

Can the gospel of file sharing really be recognized as a religion? In Sweden it can.

In the midst of a worldwide debate about Internet piracy, Swedish authorities have granted official religious status to the Church of Kopimism, which claims it considers CTRL+C and CTRL+V (shortcuts for copy and paste) to be sacred symbols, and that information is holy and copying is a sacrament.

The church was founded by philosophy student Isak Gerson, who is also the self-appointed spiritual leader of the movement. [...]

The blog Torrent Freak reports that membership in the church has grown from 1,000 to 3,000 in the last six months, and the founders expect more people to join now that its religious status is making a splash on the Internet.

“Being recognized by the state of Sweden is a large step for Kopimi,” said Gerson. “Hopefully this is one step towards the day when we can live out our faith without fear of persecution.”

I suspect that “persecution” means government agencies who want to shut down file-sharing sites like Pirate Bay.

Militant Atheism?

Psychology Today talks about the myth of militant atheism:

In fact, however, while millions of atheists are indeed walking our streets, it would be difficult to find even one who could accurately be described as militant. In all of American history, it is doubtful that any person has ever been killed in the name of atheism. In fact, it would be difficult to find evidence that any American has ever even been harmed in the name of atheism. It just does not happen, because the notion of “militant atheism” is entirely fantasy.

When the media and others refer to a “militant atheist,” the object of that slander is usually an atheist who had the nerve to openly question religious authority or vocally express his or her views about the existence of God. Conventional wisdom quickly tells us that such conduct is shameful or, at the very least, distasteful, and therefore the brazen nonbeliever is labeled “militant.”

But this reflects a double standard, because it seems to apply only to atheists. Religious individuals and groups frequently declare, sometimes subtly and sometimes not, that you are a sinner and that you will suffer in hell for eternity if you do not adopt their supernatural beliefs, but they will almost never be labeled “militant” by the media or the public. Instead, such individuals are called “devout” and such churches are called “evangelical.”

The lesson here is clear. If you’re an atheist, shut up about it. If you are open or vocal about your atheist worldview, you are a “militant atheist.” Be silent, even though that same standard does not apply to those who passionately disagree with you.

This has been my observation as well — what about you guys?
