Keith Ellison is Feeling “the Bern”

Keith Ellison is Feeling “the Bern” October 12, 2015

I was interested to learn today that Congressman Keith Ellison is endorsing Bernie Sanders for president.

indexMSNBC reported the development today and included this statement from Ellison:

I’m endorsing Bernie because he is talking about the issues that are important to American families,” Ellison told MSNBC in an email via his spokesperson. “His candidacy is important for many reasons, but I believe the most important part of his candidacy is that it has the ability to create a renaissance in voter participation, which was at its lowest in decades this past election cycle. We’ve all seen the massive crowds he is attracting, and I think that is a testament to his message connecting with people – people we will need to turn out in November.

Pundits are likening the energy (“Feel the Bern!”) that Sanders is generating, particularly among millennials. They should be (or certainly could be)  a force to reckon with at the voting booths. Obviously many people are restless and ready to push for significant progressive change in areas of vast economic disparity, massive student debt, prison reform, gun control reform, and on and on.

On a side note, this is especially interesting to me because Ellison represents the district in which I live: the 5th District in Minnesota, including the city of Minneapolis and close surrounding suburbs. Ellison is deeply respected here and–it appears–in Washington too. This endorsement is not insignificant.
