Pop star Azealia Banks has been trending the past few days, not because of music, but because of magick. On December 30th the controversial rapper posted a series of instagram videos of her “cleaning the closet she’s been performing 3 years of brujeria in.” Animal sacrifice is a difficult practice to comprehend, even for people who are aware of factory farming, and extreme treatment of animals used for food. The press has run wild with this story. A bloody closet makes a good story and they can’t ignore it.

Azealia Banks Death Spells

This isn’t the first time Azealia Banks has been in the spotlight over witchcraft and magick either. My January 2015 post Azealia Banks Outrageous Racist of Magickal Vigilante tells about her incendiary tweet where she says it’s ”  ‘time to put death spells on cops who kill innocent civilians and think they can get away with it….. OKURRRRRR?!’ Immediately people began to respond on twitter with calls to the ancient magicks and the ancestors. People called Azealia a racist, and some Wiccans even chimed in with the three fold law. ”

Brujeria

With this latest revelation Banks has literally opened the door on practices that many had no idea existed. According to her own admission the sacrifices were part of brujeria. I have seen many translate this in a gross oversimplification as witchcraft. In reality Brujerias are something much more complex. Most people use this word to refer to curses, hexes and other negative magicks they do to obtain justice, or revenge on those who have wronged them.

Azealia Banks and Animal Sacrifice

This latest act has gotten animal rights activists in an uproar. In a People magazine post PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange says “people are rightly horrified to learn that Azealia Banks reportedly has been slaughtering chickens in her closet for three years, and that she is apparently so out of touch with public sentiment that she bragged about it on social media.”

About her practices Banks also posted the statement “Real witches do real things.” I know a lot of witches who aren’t going to like that, especially the ones who live by the credo ” harm none.” However, these practices do exist. There isn’t much I can say to explain it to people who don’t understand the necessity of animals in connection with magick. I will however ask these people to consider the use of animals as food, footwear, and medicine. When I ask people if they would use parts of a chicken to save a loved one’s life if it was part of a medical diagnosis, why can’t they consider the possibility of a spiritual diagnosis involving sacrifice? It seems to me it is a matter of faith, and that is something people need to navigate for themselves.
