This is the experimental film and Spanish translation of my post Tarot, Jodorowsky, and Questions from a Crippled Hand. [Read more...]

Maya Deren: Art, Magic, and Voodoo in Transfigured Time

The true beauty of Maya Deren is that she was a renaissance woman. Most people never get past the required freshman film viewing of Meshes in the Afternoon ( a film which she shot in two weeks on her honeymoon,) but her work is so much more. She was a legend, film theorist, poet, journalist, dancer, photographer, filmmaker, and Vodou priestess. Maya Deren's innate spirituality shone through in all that she did. The L.A. Weeklydescribed Maya Deren as “Fellini and Bergman wrapped in one gloriously … [Read more...]

The Dance of Reality – Sacred , Profane, and Timeless Alejandro Jodorowsky is a genius. I thought that way before I was blessed with the opportunity to shake his hand last Friday night. The man is a filmmaker, author, shaman, visionary, iconoclast. The Dance of Reality, Jordorowsky's first film in 23 years had it's NY premiere at MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art on March 14, 2014. Like all of his films it's an artful display of a world bizarre. Most people are familiar with his cult/occult c … [Read more...]

Otherness, Power and Privilege: Vampires Are Us

Lilith Dorsey and Margot Adler. All rights reserved.

Okay, I want to be a vampire, who doesn't? They have great clothes, great hair, intimidating power, and they live forever. No wonder people are lining up for films like Twilight, and continuing to worship at the altar of Buffy Summers. I even met a gentlemen at a pagan event who claimed to practice the Vampire religion. Not sure what this entailed except for an albino complexion, a lot of leather, and a propensity for weirdness. I don't know what to make of that, and I'm also not sure what to … [Read more...]

Battles and Big Chiefs: More History of the Mardi Gras Indians

Skeleton Rifle Indian photo by Infrogmation of New Orleans. Licensed under CC 2.0

As I started writing about in my last post, the Mardi Gras Indians are one of the most fascinating and intense facets of Carnival in New Orleans. There are a lot of reasons the tradition continues and people still "mask as Indian." Back in the day the tribes or gangs as they were called back then, would do actual battle in the street. Rival gangs fought it out with fists, knives, hatchets or worse, and there was much fear surrounding these altercations. The Violence came to an end however, with … [Read more...]

There are definitely some practical tips and some special Voodoo secrets for surviving the Zombie Apocalypse. Many of you know I'm way down in New Orleans celebrating Carnival time. Tonight I will be reading Voodoo tarot cards and Walking Dead Zombie watching at Snake and Jake's Christmas Club lounge. So in honor of that here are some lessons from a Voodoo Priestess on Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse.Disclaimer: I've discussed in depth how voodoo is related to Zombies in only the most remote … [Read more...]
