Orange is the New Black Puts On Santeria Whites

Rarely do we get a portrayal of the Santeria Religion, more correctly known as La Regla Lucumi, on television. It seems that Orange is the New Black is trying to change that. In the past media has made the religion a scapegoat for all dark and mysterious practices they wish to demonize. Television history has given us such sensationalized Santeria offerings as Eartha Kitt as Priestess Chata on the 1985 “Whatever Works” episode of Miami Vice. The episode opens in a typically trope-tastic way with … [Read more...]

Tarot Fool and Foolishness: The Beginning of the End

Fool 0 final by Cassandra Santori. Text added. Licensed under CC 2.0

How dieth the wise man? As the fool.- Ecclesiastes 2:16The end of divination month here on Voodoo Universe has me thinking about tarot meanings, beginnings and endings, and the supreme power of Zero. In Tarot, the fool is assigned the number zero, if we can even call zero a number. In the same way, it's hard to say if the fool card is even a card. Like the joker in the modern deck of playing cards, it is a holdover from ancient times past. It is everything and nothing, the … [Read more...]

The Pagan community lost another leader yesterday with the passing of Morning Glory Zell. She was a glorious visionary and a friend. I planted Morning Glories today in honor of her. Happy Ostara, Everybody! Happy Easter, as you may be used to calling the day! Nothing like a sacred whore to celebrate the holy season, so today I'm writing about two of the most famous ever, Pomba Gira and Mary Magdalene. Neo-Pagans in general seem to have a special affinity for both of these women, probably because they are real, they have sex, they help people, they don't make excuses. There are some differences, however. I'm not proposing a celebrity death match between the two, but they are … [Read more...]
