Onions, garlic, paprika, these are spices of life that make us strong. They were the classic ingredients of our ancestor's fried chicken recipes, and we still love to eat them today. Many of the popular soul food dishes from the Southern U.S. grew in popularity because of the necessity of the everyday lives of the slaves. Cornbread and Fried chicken both traveled well for those seeking their freedom via the underground railroad. The Underground Railroad was a complex network of safe houses where … [Read more...]

Voodoo Priestess Says Bye Bye American Horror Story Coven

American Horror Story Coven Recruits photo by Lilith Dorsey

Zombies, Witch Hunters, Red-Eyed Papa Legba, and Blood Bathing Marie Laveau, honestly even if I live to see the "seven wonders,"... I may never see anything as strange as this again. American Horror Story Coven has brought New Orleans Voodoo and Witchcraft into our livingrooms these past several months and we may never be the same again. My post Voodoo Truth About Papa Legba got some viral Voodoo buzz, and I'd like to think that's because people really do want and need to know more about this … [Read more...]

Legba Is Different From The Barons: We All Look Alike to You?

There are a lot of divinities, or Lwa, in the Voodoo pantheon -- some say 101, some say 401, some say as many as you can imagine and then add one more. There are legions of spirits, each one unique and sacred in its own blessed way. Everyone has the potential to become divine, and that is one of the most beautiful things about the religion. My last post, where I spent less than a paragraph discussing American Horror Story: Coven, sparked a lot of attention. As a reply to a comment, I stated … [Read more...]

The Voodoo Truth About Papa Legba

Detail from Legba Ritual Altar. Photo by Lilith Dorsey

“We used to know we were stronger than the devil”- Amiri Baraka We used to know we weren't the devil either. I woke this morning with this quote from poet Amiri Baraka on my mind. The award winning poet, playwright, and visionary passed over into the realm of the ancestors Thursday January 9th. I remember seeing him (as much as a 4 year old can remember anything) at an interactive play he staged about the Underground Railroad. He was controversial and sometimes confrontational like V … [Read more...]

Voodoo Priestess Predicts Bad Things for Legba’s Arrival on American Horror Story Coven

Legba by erokism licensed under CC by 2.0.

This just in: Entertainment Weekly is reporting that joining the American Horror Story Coven cast in the role of, you guessed it, Papa Legba, will be Lance Reddick. This can't be good. They are already touting him as the Voodoo Devil, and let the stereotypes continue. It would have been nice if we could be optimistic about Legba's arrival. Practitioners of New Orleans Voodoo, such as myself, view Papa Lebga as a guardian, a wise father guiding us down and through the paths of life. How Did the … [Read more...]

The Horrors of American Horror Story Coven: A Voodoo Priestess’ Perspective

Dr. John and Lilith Dorsey at Krewe du Vieux 2010

There is a show on FX TV....Full of fluff about Wicca n Voodoo. It will be the ruin of those poor producers,I hope they don't think they've won. No I'm only kidding. I'm not hexing them. I just like filk, it's like mental floss. But, I've held my forked Voodoo tongue long enough. We are about halfway through the latest season of AHS Coven. Angela Basset is beaming with the fact her Marie Laveau performance has been rated in the top five of her career. The season … [Read more...]

Sell My Soul: Commodification in Voodoo and Santeria (La Regla Lukumi)

Botanica photo by Daniel Lobo

Sex sells. Sin sells. Voodoo sells. It's true, I didn't make it up. There has always been controversy around money and religion, and when we add psychics and spirits we just up the ante. The current season of American Horror Story Coven uses a bizarre mix of reality and supreme fantasy to get its point across, a major clothing manufacturer places a giant veve ( ritual symbol) for Papa Legba in its store window to sell t-shirts, and I'm left shaking my head. Shantrelle Lewis did a piece on the … [Read more...]
