Ancestor Altars and shrines are a part of many different religions. They are present in Christian homes, Buddhist homes, Pagan homes, and even in Atheists' homes. They can be as simple as a glass of water and a picture of Grandpa, or given an entire room to spread out in. Let me begin by making the distinction that altars are usually created for a specific purpose, while shrines are generally set up as a way of honoring what is represented. A ancestor shrine is a site to honor those who have … [Read more...]

A Little Lore from the Leprechaun Museum for St. Patrick’s Day

A Little Lore from the Leprechaun Museum, photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

I was going to call this piece Voodoo goes to the Leprechauns, because we did. Like many of us out there, my family and I have a bit of Pagan Irish heritage in our family tree. Because of my devotion to the goddess Brighid (also known as Brigit) and her Voodoo sister Maman Brigitte, I borrowed a little Irish luck and took a trip to the Emerald Isle. One of the many magickal joys of my trip was a visit to the Leprechaun Museum in Dublin. Please share my visit and watch the following film I made … [Read more...]

How Anti-Pagan St. Patrick Became Voodoo’s Damballa !

St. Patrick photo by Gordon T. Lawson. Licensed under CC 2.0

In Voodoo inside out, upside down, and backwards are often all the same thing. It's this creative way of thinking that allies Ireland's St. Patrick with the Haitian Vodou God Damballa. St. Patrick is notorious in legend for driving the snakes out of Ireland. However, today's article by Independent.ie tells us that it was most likely Pagans that were removed from Ireland by the saint. More specifically the group Crom Cruich, which used the snake as it's symbol. Crom Cruich literally translates to … [Read more...]

Tarot Tea Anyone? Crowley Chai Chat?

Tarot Tea Anyone? by Lilith Dorsey

The world is a big and sometimes overwhelming arena to navigate, the same can be said of the blogosphere. Then when you start talking about adding Pagans to the mix things can get weirder and more wonderful, in my experience. Christine Hoff Kraemer, our managing editor here at Patheos Pagan, has put out the clarion call! In her post Building Pagan Intellectual Culture Face to Face, she writes, “during the month of February, if you write online, make a date to have a cup of tea (or food or drink o … [Read more...]

Krampus Is Cool This Christmas!

Grub Vom Krampus! by wendEwho! Thompson licensed under CC 2.0

You may be thinking, why is the Voodoo Universe blog making a stop to talk about Krampus ? Well, Krampus is cool. The Nazis hated him, and he has had two appearances on network television this month. He drinks beer and he will beat you into submission if you don't behave. Sounds like a modern hero to me. If he isn't honored as a Gede (Voodoo ancestor spirit) yet, he certainly should be. He represents social control and the awesome power of disguise. Masquerade is a vital component of magic in … [Read more...]
