PATH Member PFOX Files Amicus Brief in the Prop 8 Case

Citing the "change is possible" mantra, PFOX has filed an amicus brief in the Prop 8 case arguing against marriage rights for gays. This is not surprising but I have some observations about their strategy. In this brief, PFOX continues its odd logic of considering ex-gays to be a protected class while at the same time hoping to remove/prevent protected class status for gays. On page 4, the brief asserts:Government authorities and other organizations recognize ex-gays as a group which … [Read more...]

Reparative Therapy Makeover Continues: When Reparative Isn’t Reparative

Past president of the National Association for the Research and Therapy of Homosexuality is trying really hard to distance her organization from history and the organization's leaders. In an article posted on NARTH's website, Hamilton comments on her recent appearance on the Dr. Oz show (see my posts on that subject here and here) and makes a case that...the term “reparative” never referred to trying to “repair” someone. It was originally used to refer to the “Reparative Theory” that when a chi … [Read more...]

Evergreen Celebrates the Nobleman

In 2010, the Jewish ex-gay group Jonah began recommending the human potential group Celebration of Being to constituents as a step on the ex-gay journey. At the time, I wondered if CoB would become a "new way to ex-gay." Now People Can Change and Mormon ex-gay group Evergreen International are joining in.A notice from Evergreen offers:Breakthrough Healing with Women: The Noble Man WorkshopCelebration of the Noble Man: Healing Men's Wounds With Women. Writer Journeys into Manhood undercover

According to a Salt Lake City newspaper, writer Ted Cox wanted to know what an ex-gay program was like so he signed up for a Journey into Manhood weekend in Utah. He planned to write a story about it but was derailed by JIM founder Rich Wyler.Cox, a former Mormon, is a heterosexual who, earlier this year, pretended to be gay in order to attend a JiM workshop for men wanting to “overcome same-sex attractions.”Upon learning of Cox’s story proposal, JiM founder and life coach Rich Wyler qui … [Read more...]

Masculinity and same-sex attraction

I was talking to an acquaintance who attended a Journey into Manhood weekend. He was disappointed that his attractions to the same sex did not evaporate after the weekend. To be sure, he felt a greater sense of masculinity and much less self-conscious. During the first week or two after the weekend, he seemed to notice women more and did not feel the usual tug to look at gay porn. However, after awhile he noticed something unexpected. At what he felt was the height of his feelings of security … [Read more...]

Divided Memories: Genesis Associates and Detachment

I have posted before about Genesis Associates and am now posting more of the documentary about their controversial techniques. This time detachment is the focus of the clip. I believe this documentary is so important as a cautionary tale regarding expressive therapies - such as recommended by Richard Cohen and the Mankind Project. It is a long (over 8 minutes) but an important clip demonstrating that unfounded ideas can lead to harmful effects. … [Read more...]
