Benjamin Franklin’s Prophecy about Those Who Seek To Be President

On June 2, 1787, PA delegate James Wilson read a paper written by the elder statesman of the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin, which made a case against paying the chief executive a salary. While Franklin thought the executive should be reimbursed for expenses incurred while serving, he did not believe a salary would bring out the best candidates. In fact, he was direct about the kind of people who would seek an office promising power and money. And of what kind are the men that … [Read more...]

V.P. Mike Pence Lauds Donald Trump’s Leadership at Grove City College Commencement

Today was Commencement at Grove City College where I teach psychology. We had a super graduating class of Seniors who are going to do great things in their professions and graduate schools around the world. It was a good day for them, even with all of the extra security measures designed to keep us and Vice President Pence safe. This is What a Court Evangelical Sounds Like

Messiah College's chair of the history department John Fea coined the phrase "court evangelical" to describe evangelical leaders who defend Donald Trump no matter what he does. Even Republican Senators have expressed confusion and negative reactions to the firing of James Comey, but not the court evangelicals. Watch:"We need to concentrate on these real accomplishments instead of being distracted by the manufactured Comey crisis" ~ @robertjeffress #MAGA … [Read more...]

Reaction to Trump’s Religious Liberty Executive Order

Everything Trump and his supporters want to change must be done legislatively or via rule making.Reaction to the order has been much more interesting and in some cases substantial than the order itself. First, I start with comments from Rick Cohen, Director of Communications with the National Council of Nonprofits. After I saw a press … [Read more...]

Donald Trump Signs Executive Order on Religious Freedom (with Text)

Although it is much ado about nothing much, Donald Trump signed an executive order on religious freedom today. After reading through it, I am pretty sure Christian bakers, florists, and photographers are still going to have to serve gays. I don't think this order changes anything. All of these directives specify that any actions be done within existing law. Any real changes must come via legislation. You can read it hereĀ and below: THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary FOR … [Read more...]

Donald Trump’s Odd Attraction to Andrew Jackson

In an interview slated to air this afternoon on Sirius Radio, Donald Trump reportedly lauds Andrew Jackson and implies Jackson would have prevented the Civil War (link, link). Leaker or Whistleblower? It Depends on Your Point of View

It has been fascinating to watch the differences of perspective play out in the controversy over possible improper links between Donald Trump's campaign and people associated with Vladimir Putin. Two illustrations follow. First, listen to Evelyn Farkas described her efforts to alert colleagues in the Obama administration about the need to preserve information pertinent to possible Trump collusion with Putin loyalists. This is big! Evelyn Farkas admits she helped spy on Trump for Obama. … [Read more...]
