Hindu Worship Tuesday July 4th, 2017

Hindu Worship for Tuesday July 4, 2017 Tuesdays are dedicated to Sri Hanuman and Muruga/Kartikeya, the brother of Sri Ganesha. Hanuman is a very special deity. He is most known for his incredible selfless devotion to Lord Rama. It is said that at one point he tears open his chest to reveal that Rama and Sita actually reside literally in his heart. At one point Sri Hanuman says that in the world of maya Lord Rama is his master, but in reality Lord Rama and he are one. How to Worship Sri … [Read more...]

Hindu Worship for Monday July 3, 2017

I was talking with my brother and my husband and an idea came up that I wanted to test out. (I am always getting wacky ideas and I tend to dive in and try to do them without thinking it all the way through so we'll see how this goes. Temple Buddy was a failure, though I think it could be great if it has a stronger network and was run by someone with a different skill set).Anyway, my current idea is to make this a space where you can check in and get a daily reminder (okay, that's ambitious, … [Read more...]

Hinduism Is Different

I'm getting rather frustrated by people dismissing all religions as being basically the same. What I mean is that many of my friends are atheists. They are all wonderful. They are respectful of different points of view and they are highly moral people. I adore them. But I've noticed that many of them and the other Americans around me have a very binary view on religion. Either you believe in the Abrahamic conception of God or you don't believe at all. I was having a conversation with some … [Read more...]

What Does Om Really Mean?

You've seen it, you've heard it. People say Om in yoga class, or when making fun of bohemian hippie types. There are puns and you can get an Om symbol emblazoned on anything. Anything at all. But what does OM really mean?It isn't a word per say. It is a sound and a symbol that represent the vibration of the entire universe. This is what the symbol looks like (not counting the circle):Om is sometimes written Ohm or Aum. It actually comes from three letters put together: Ah-Ooo-Ma … [Read more...]

Does Trump Know You Aren’t Muslim?

If you think Trump can tell the difference between a Muslim and a Hindu, I'm worried for your sanity. He won this election by courting the kinds of Christians who want to make America fully Christian. Maybe they graciously allow a few people of other religions to exist here, but it would be their country. Not only that, but Trump has proudly courted white supremacists. Many of his supporters are people who think that giving equal rights and fair treatment to minorities is an attack on … [Read more...]

A Temple Buddy At Last!

Despite my decade of identifying as Hindu I still get very self conscious about showing up at a Hindu temple. I think many of you know what that's like. In theory I know everything to do but I'm still so scared of doing things wrong, of having all eyes on me, etc.I've been wanting for a while to find someone to go with me and I wrote before about my Hindu cousin moving closer to the area. But she's still about an hour's drive away without traffic so it hasn't worked out for her to be my … [Read more...]

How the Internet Changed My Faith

Ever since I was a little girl I longed for community. I didn't feel like I belonged anywhere and I was envious of people who were born into tight-knit communities. My best friend Sarah is Jewish and when we were kids I went to her temple and learned about Judaism from her, seriously considering converting because of the community I saw in her culture. I was fascinated with the Amish who draw together into a tight community against outsiders. The strange thing is I was part of a cultural … [Read more...]

Radicalized

I'm not quite sure how to say this. I don't want to be misunderstood here. And I'm going to say something that may sound a little outrageous. Please don't have me committed! My trip to India dramatically changed my perspective on the world and I can kind of see how outfits like Isis recruit westerners. We talk about how people become "radicalized" by bad influences. But from their point of view, their eyes are being opened to the truth and everyone who says they've fallen in with a bad … [Read more...]
